MIJ Majestic Score Last viewed: 7 seconds ago

Hi Friends,

I scored on this 100% complete Majestic set yesterday on CL for $150 (12/14/20/14sn). She was an attic find, so she's dirty, but no extra holes or damage and even the full inlay is still there on the bd hoops! These are the thicker Luan shells with no re-rings.

Question for the MIJ professionals...are these late 60's/early 70's? Any idea on the name of this wrap? Are there any reference sites to info on Majestic drums online?

Can't wait to play this little kit. I really dig the sizes, the offset lugs and the wrap. I have traditionally not been a big fan of satin flame wraps, but this one is pretty cool. Any comments and info welcome.

very cool! amazing to find a kit with all of the parts like that. I agree that satin flame wraps are not my cup of tea either but this one is really cool. I hope you post some pics when you get it all polished. They will sound good too, I just know it!

congrats!

Thank you!

These are great little kits. I had an all original attic find kit like yours, mine was in a blue strata finish. Wish I never got rid of it. Forum member Ralf will probably chime in, knows everything there is to know about Star/Majestic drums and has a cool website. By the way, that's the original reso head with that logo.

Very nice score! Even has the original front head you can put your initials in!

I would say they are early to mid-70's, without the presence of re-rings puts them in that range.

That should be 1968 or later generally speaking.

I restored a Majestic kit from that era:

The 14in FT was perhaps the lowest and best sounding 14in FTs I have ever heard.

The snare had a great vintage woody tonoe to it - much better than most MIJ snares from that time. I would attribute it to the shells being quite thick.

Vintage original hardware too - Great score! I have a whole set of vintage MIJ hardware that I use one a regular basis (gigging). Takes some deliberate attention but 'performs' fine...and all fit into one xylaphone case with wheels.

Softly sand the edges and tune to the shell (ala timbre pitching / John Good/DW). And, give her all new heads - that kit is worthy and she will thank you for it in great tone.

Congrats - great specimen!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Exact same lugs on the toms as the ones I was asking about here the other day (see pic). It would seem a lot of the Japanese brands used the same hardware manufacturer?

Nice drums though, great finish. Well done!

Hello ElMoonlightDrummer

fantastic find you have there, and a super deal price-wise

I have seen the wrap referred to as avocado satin flame and/or simply green satin flame

I have this super scratched up and rashed "Duke" badged drum kit like those

same wrap and shell construction

I paid 170.00 shipped for just the bass drum, mounted tom, and snare drum

and like I said, they are pretty beat up wrap-wise

the bass and snare were complete but no reso side on the mounted tom

then I sort of rebuilt myself a floor tom

from a $5.00, stripped, avocado green satin flame floor tom shell

that I had hanging around the shop here

I love the staggered lugs on those Majestic Deluxe kits Enjoy them
