Ludwig Value

Loading...

I picked up this 1966 Ludwig kit in a wmp finish. It has the base ball bat mufflers and white interiors. The wrap has slightly yellowed and the rail mount is missing, but there are no extra holes. The main issue is the rack and floor tom had the edges professionally re-cut top and bottom. How much does that de-value the kit? Thanks.

Hi jr!

It's a tough call as to how much the new edges de-value the kit. Anytime a vintage kit is modified, it can lose value. The new edges appear to have a sharper profile than the original, correct? A previous owner may have done this for various reasons. My friend, Chris Heuer (owner of Heuer's Drum Lab in Burbank) does not like to re-cut edges on vintage drums, but will if the owner insists on it. What Chris will do is to level the edges, if needed, and re-contour the edges back to the original profile. I have no issues with this type of modification if it is truly needed.

Maybe other more experienced Ludwig experts will chime in on this one!

On an original kit like that? Definitely worth less. Comparing against the same unmodified kit, probably 20% less or more. It would have to be sold as a players kit.

Definitely a player's kit now. I'd say at least 25% off whatever the asking price would be if it was all original.

Hi Nick! I'm assuming you're referring to me?!!

So, I'm a "Ludwig Lover"...LoLoLoLo

Yes, I've had quite a few vintage Ludwig kits over the decades, but I've sold every last one of them as I was never crazy about them! I know, the horror of saying that! The first pro kit I ever laid eyes on was a 60's Super Classic at West Covina Music, wrapped in WMP. I've also had some newer kits, including a beautiful looking CM kit in a Downbeat configuration, which I also sold. In the end, I stick with Rogers and Slingerland!

I think he means me, I am a true Ludwig lover.Cool1

I only played the kit a little today, had trouble getting 13 to sound right, I couldn't get wrinkles out of bottom head unless I tensioned really tight. It was an Evans clear head, (I hate Evans heads), so I swapped it out for a coated Aquarian I had lying around, problem solved.

They sounded good, but I'll know better tomorrow when I really lay it to them.
