Ludwig Super Sensitive - guards?

Picked this puppy up on ebay on a low-ball bid. I don't plan to restore anything, except to clean it up, replace the heads, maybe the wires....

uh oh! Spinning out of control.

Really, I just wanted to check this out after reading about it in the Ludwig book. I dig the design and build of the snare throw off.

When I pull it out of the box, I saw the guard around the "butt plate" was bent. Well, no surprise.

The I saw the other was bent, too, and it was symmetrical. So I wondered... this CAN'T be the normal way those guards are built.... right??

Actually, I'm hoping someone will say 'yes,' because if I do decide to straighten them, they're riveted on...and it doesn't look like an easy job. Or is there someone here who does these??

Haven't had much time to play with it, other than to spray silicone on the throw offs. It'll be fun, and once it's dialed in, I bet it sounds great!

Bill - See? That's why those guards are there! That drum took a bad shot, maybe dropped at some point. You can try to wrestle the guards back into shape, but it's not easy and they never look quite right. Best bet is to invest a few more dollars in the drum and buy a 60's snare-side hoop with straight guards on it. I've had to do it more than once myself. I've owned a bunch of s.s. over the years. A lot of them came to me with one, or both guards already bent.

John -- it sure did take some hits! It is pretty stout metal... I'm not even going to think about it...

I am thinking about investing a bit more for the 60's snare side hoop. I don't know how often they come up, or the $.

On the other hand is... the bent guards don't interfere at all...

I dunno..I'm going to see what the freight is on the 60's hoop. It sure wouldn't have to be beautiful!

Thanks --

p.s. I was working on your speed King when your response came in. Coming along....

I'm trying not to think about it so I don't get antsy. You're no help at all! LOL

Can't wait to get it, Bill. You're an artist with those pedals.

John... it's pretty fun to have the time.. just finished wet sanding the pistons...

On the Super Sensitive it looks like it would be possible to drill out the rivets holding those guards on the hoop... it'd be much easier to work on...

this is one of those "what if works??!!" kinds of things...

planning a visit to Harbor Freight tomorrow for new step-drill bits for the aforementioned Speed King... Maybe look at their metal working stuff...

anyone ever done these??

Bill - If you do remove the guards you can bend them back into shape using a vise and a rubber mallet. While you're at Harbor Freight look for something to rivet/clip them back onto the hoop later. Here's a link for you to check out. Damn affordable too!

Post some more photos after you mess with the gates.
