LUDWIG STANDARD by PAISTE cymbals?

Loading...

I did that same thing. I found a local music shop with a 40's radio king set WMP, original calf heads, wood block, cowbell, mount, hihat stand. 14x12 mount 24x14 bass 16x16 floor. Brand new condition except for what appeared to be a cigarette burn on the floor tom. Some didiot trying to be cool put his smoke out on his drum. I got it for $400, played it for a bit and sold it on ebay with a BIN of $2200 plus shipping. It didnt even last a day.

Thank god for ebay, it lets you find someone who finds your trash actually worth somthing.

From Ludwig Guy

Hi,Can anyone tell me a little bit about "Ludwig Standard by Paiste" cymbals? I see them on sale often on eBay. I know that they were produced in the 60's and that some were Swiss made and others made in Germany. Which ones are worth more and which sound better? Also, were these cymbals considered to be professional quality or semi-pro? Thanks for your help.Ludwig Dude

I have a set of Ludwig Standards. 18" , 16 " , pair of 14". Stamped

"Ludwig Standard-Paiste-Swiss Made". With a groovy star and moon logo. They sound great. Though not hard rock cymbals. For jazz or lighter rock I love them. They might have been entry level cymbals in the early sixties. But maybe not really. Zildjian was the only game in town for so long that perhaps these cymbals were not expensive just to get them on the map. There was a Ludwig-Paiste association that began in the sixties. I saw Joe Morello at a clinic in 1968 and he was playing Paiste cymbals with his silver sparkle Ludwig set. I would recommend these over any used cymbal for the price if they suit your playing style.

Wow. An ancient resurrect.

Joe used 602s for a time while Ludwig had a deal going with Paiste. But Zildjian came back on the scene for both Ludwig and Joe.

There is one of Joe's 602s at Steve Maxwells. With a sound file.

You can see the other brands he had in his collection. And some Paiste 3000s. This is just a subset of those which are still at Maxwells. There were more which went to new homes.

And for those wanting to follow up on the Ludwig Standard by Paiste cymbals:

which is also a great source for all things Paiste. And there is also further info at

I have a set of Ludwig "Standard" Paiste's that are Swiss made. I bought them new in 1965 with my Downbeat kit. I have a 20" ride, 16" crash and 14" HH. I replaced everything in 1970 with Zildjans except I kept the 16", it has a sweet sound I loved.
