Ludwig Shells across the 70's to 90's

Loading...

Hi all.

Hope everyone is well.

I am a little confused with a couple of kits I have, in their shell make up. All the kits mentioned are maple/poplar/maple construction.

Let me explain:

I have just got a 1970's (appears to be 1976) Thermogloss Ludwig, with a 24" bass drum (it is a 5 piece with the toms mounted on the bass drum - looks amazing!). It appears to be 6-ply.

I have 2x modular series Ludwig's, one from the 80's and one from the early 90's. Both of these (I am told) are 6-ply too, both have 22" bass drums but they weigh a lot more.

The 24" is easy to pick up with one hand, the 2x 22"s are harder to pick up with 2 hands.

What part of shell construction am I missing? Is it the thickness of the plies?

The modular sets have power toms etc, so they naturally weigh more as they are physically bigger, but the bass drums are 2" smaller.

I can post pic later (I am at work now) if that helps.

Cheers.

Without pics, it would be speculation via your observation ... both would be flawed. When you post pics, the goodness will flow from the noggins of the informed, bless 'em.

Brain explosion time. I do have pics here on my PC.

I am really keen to see 'goodness flow from Noggins' :-)

Cheers

Does your 24" have rerings? If so it is probably a 3 ply, and the 22" are 6 ply. My 22" 6 ply is much heavier than my 24" 3 ply's. That's one reason I leave my 6ply's in my studio. There so heavy to lug in and out.

I did notice you have the larger spurs on the 24" which are usually on the 6 ply's, unless they were using up the last of the 3 ply's when they went to the larger spurs and spur mounts.

Hi.

Sorry, I meant to mention. None of the kits have re-rings.

I have 3-ply kits and the thermogloss is not the same.

Cheers

Mid 70's to late 80's super classic were 6 ply,and classics were 4 ply.The reason for the weight discrepency,is the massive modular hardware, which prpbably weighs twice to a third more than classic hardware. The mach style lugs also were heavier than classic lugs.

Ok. Thanks. I wondered if it was the hardware, still surprised it adds that much weight. It isn't an insignificant amount of difference, especially as the lighter drum is bigger.

Cheers

HI ncl !!

Beautiful kits all of three, congrats.

I am maybe wrong, but I guess one of the 80`s (the green one) has two pairs of 1/2" bass drum spurs.... It´s that correct?

Those kind of spurs are really heavy!!

Besides, as mentioned above, match lugs also increase average weight.

I hope it helps

Best regards!!

Actually your correct. Both the green and the mahogany mist have 4spurs, which has just made me realise that the bass drum is deeper on these two than the thermogloss :-).

I have never had them setup side by side.

Cheers for all the help guys, even though I feel a bit foolish now ;-)
