Ludwig mid-70's kit questions Last viewed: 20 minutes ago

Hi All,

New member and not even a drummer.  But I have a kit that I'm hoping to find a good home for and just wanted to make sure the asking price is reasonable.  I don't really need the money so I might even give it away to the local kids rock school unless maybe it has some hidden value I'm not aware of.

This set was my brothers but been in my possesion for the last 25 or so years so our drummer doesn't have to lug his kit around for rehearsals at my house.

Best guess is that my brother was given it ~1974 give or take.  I think it was new at the time but can't say for sure.  Knowing my father (University music professor, band director, and drums were his secondary instrument), it would have been a solid utilitarian kit but not over the top.

Blue/olive badges - bass drum serial #1193537, snare serial #1175391,  No markings on the cymbols (at least not anymore).

Thanks for any help or info you can give.

Your serial numbers 117xxxx and 119xxxx would be expected for ~'74.

Those are pretty nice drums, in need of a bit of spit and polish.

Check the cymbals carefully.  There should be some engraving a few inches from the edges.  If you find them, take some clear photos.  The value of the cymbals could significantly alter the overall value of the set.

Either way, you're not talking about a fantastically expensive set.  They would be an excellent donation to a school or young drummer in need, or sell them if that what you want to do.  Depending on cymbal value, you could get $800 to $1600 I would think.  Others may disagree...

Thanks.   Yes, they definately are in need of a good cleaning.  😁

There should be some engraving a few inches from the edges.

Sorry I didn't see any signs of that - would that be on the top or underside?

As a side question, speaking of spit and polish - are these the type of cymbals that should be polished?

here are the pics of one anyways.  I think it's the crash.

That is a complete, catalog correct Ludwig Hollywood kit, from '74, other than having a different snare.

The snare is a Ludwig Acrolite, which was their "student" snare. Same aluminum shell as the more expensive Supraphonic, just with a painted finish and 8 lugs rather than 10, but they are excellent snares.

There is a Avedis Zildjian stamp at about the 1 o' Clock position, about half way in on the top in that first picture so they are A Zildjians assuming they all have the stamp.

Blue sparkle finish is pretty common so generally bring less than some finishes. The shells are three ply Mahogany-Poplar-Maple with solid Maple reinforcement rings.  They are probably grey speckle painted on the inside.

The cymbal stands are Ludwig 1400, the snare stand is a 1363 and the hi hat is a 1123-1. They are considered lightweight by today's standards, but I use all of them for any type of music with no problems and they don't break your back when hauling them around. If you are not a basher, they are great.

The pedal in the background is a Speed King and are great, simple and dependable pedals.

All around desireable drums.

The vintage drum market is pretty soft right now so I would agree on the price on the kit itself.  The cymbals another $400 to $500.

You can polish the cymbals with any of the commercial cymbal polishes, but they look like they have a nice patina so I would just leave them as is.

If you don't need the money and have a school that could use them, that would be a great donation.

Thank you very much for such complete information on the kit.

They are probably grey speckle painted on the inside.

Yes, they are.

There is a Avedis Zildjian stamp at about the 1 o' Clock position,

Your eyes are way better than mine - I still can't see it but I'll take your word for it.

Here is a cropped version of your picture with the logo area highlighted as well as a clearer example of what the logo looks like.

There are some variations over the years but this is basically what the logo stamp looks like.

Thin Shell is extremely knowledgeable: go with what he says.

The engraving, actually a stamp, is present as he says, but it is about the faintest I have ever seen!  The other cymbals may have similar stamps (top side only).  These are an excellent brand of cymbal (Avedis Zildjian) and will likely make the next owner(s) of the drums happy.

The drums appear perfectly serviceable and appear to include a few extras I can see in the photos (spare pedal, trap case, extra heads and sticks).  There's a bit of rust on the rim of the snare, most of which can be removed with enough effort.  I would assume there is more rust on other chrome bits, particularly the tension rods, but overall a very nice complete set of drums - a time capsule!  Good luck in whatever way you part with the drums.

Getting my brother involved in the decision so might take a week or two to decide.  He's on the fence about keeping the set.   He hasn't played drums in more than 35 years - but retirement is looming close.

I did find all 4 cymbal engravings.  Both the ride and crash were very faint but the two high hat's were much clearer.

Looks like the floor tom is a bit different - which is why the coloring is slightly different than the other shells.  Not a blue/olive Ludwig.   Instead it has a Slingerland badge.  Not sure if that changes anything?

I tried to add a picture of it but keep ketting a "server error" when I add the pic.   But it's a gold or brass oval badge with a hole in the middle with the following text.

SLINGERLAND

QUALITY DRUMS

CHICAGO, ILL. U.S.A.

no serial number on the badge.

The extra's that will go with the kit are the cases, trap kit, a hi-hat mounted tamborine and only one extra 8" tom head.   Although I did get a new bass head to replace the one with a big hole in it.    Most of the sticks are either unmatched singles, just plane junk, or belong to our band's drummer.  I need to keep the throne and newer bass pedal for the electric kit that will replace the acoustic kit for practice.  I actually still have the original throne - but it's got almost no pading, not very comfortable.

New Question

Is there a trick to taking down the high hat stand so it fits in the trap case?   I know the very topmost (thin) rod unscrews and can be separated but the rest still is too long to fit.

Looks like I already have a lot of great info - so don't know if it's needed.  But I have a link for the google drive folder with a lot more pictures (and full size too).  I think anyone who's interested can message me since I don't have enough posts to add a link to the thread.

Ha, totally should have caught that on the floor tom.  That does ding it somewhat, but asuming it's also a three ply, they should sound good together because the shell makeup is pretty much the same.
