Another genius idea...this set of 6 Ludwig bass drums were sawed in half to make impact drums at some point in the past. After fitting with replacement hardware I filled the gaps with silicone II and covered with white gaff tape. Add a set of drum covers and one of my middle schools now has a better set of marching basses that sound great. The trick is in the muffling.

Yes, I myself could never saw drums half like this...it was a hack job anyway. The only time it was excusable was in the 60s before DCI allowed timpani - the Boston Crusaders sawed bass drums in half and tuned them like timpani to circumvent the rule. Now that was genius.
