Ludwig Franken Kit - advice

Hi there - during 2017, I purchased a blue and olive clear interior 1971 Ludwig 3 ply 22x14 bass drum with hoops, inlays and heads and 16" floor tom in blue sky pearl - the wrap is in great condition with no fading, discoloring, cracks, cigarette burns etc - just a little seam lift on both. Bearing edges are perfect but the chrome needed some work.

Be that as it may, there was no rack tom and locally I could find nothing. Eventually I found a 1971 blue olive 13" tom in the USA via eBay and bought it - it, after shipping, cost me more than the abovementioned two drums but that's life - I paid $250 for it which I'm happy with. Only drawback - it was white marine pearl. At that time I could not find a blue olive, clear interior 1971 drum in blue sky pearl. The wrap on this tom is also in very good condition with limited discoloring - hardly noticeable and the chrome is in great condition.

So now my 1971 Luddie 3ply maple kit is 2 colors - see pic attached. I'm toying with the idea of re-wrapping the 13" in blue sky pearl, in order to match the other two drums, but I am concerned that the colors may not match exactly. This is my home studio kit, I don't gig with it and it is purely an OCD thing.

Do you guys think that I should leave it as is, or I should consider re-wrapping the 13" - if so, where will I be able to buy an identical wrap? Will Ludwig sell wrap to the public?

I bought vintage sbp from Jammin Sam to re-wrap a Slingerland floor and kick to match a tom I had. The new wrap was much bluer, which makes sense. The tom was in great condition, but faded over 40 years. The new wrap will not match perfectly and you'll ruin a perfectly good wmp drum.

I would also suggest leaving the drums just as you have them now

while you continue the search for a sky blue tom

Resist the OCD thing

That drum will show up for you

You have a better shot at a match with a vintage shell rather a new wrap

I would also not touch the WMP.

as long as you like the sound out of it in the studio I would look into maybe someone wanting a WMP tom and they have a SBP to trade.

or it might be easier to find a SBP and then sell the WMP after.

original would sell easier and worth more untouched.

Just order a piece of wrap for the tom. Do not strip the WMP wrap. Apply the wrap with double-stick tape at the seam. The lug screws and tom mounting hardware will hold the taped wrap tightly in place. If the heads will not fit over the double layer of wrap, just trim off about 1/2 inch of the new wrap along both the top and bottom edges. You will not harm the original WMP, and may have a tom that matches the other drums in the set.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Hi there - thanks guys. I think for now I will take your advice and fight my OCD! However buying a blue sky pearl tom will be problematic too as chances are highly unlikely that I will find one locally - the lone that Ludwig402 spotted (thanks for that:-)) is a fair price but for me to ship that to South Africa will cost in excess of $130 - so for now, I'll grin and bear it and maybe follow leedy's advice if it all gets too much :-)

I'd leave it. Seems to be a bit of trend of having mismatched colors on a drum kit.

I personally think it looks cool as is. I'm sure one day you'll find a SBP tom, and if it

were me, i wouldn't care if it was clear, white, or ludcoat interior, so long as the wrap

matched. But that's just me ;)

Keep your kit as is. If anybody remarks about it tell them you chose the WMP due to its superior tone compared to the original blue sky pearl.
