Most likely because of the popularity of the power sizes at the time. Everyone was going that route. Even the jazzers of the era.......I've got a DVD of Sonny Rollins live @ the Montreal Jazz Festival, 1982 with Jack Dejohnette on drums, and his Sonors were all power sizes then.

It was the fashion of the time, I suppose......

Just to bump this thread, I know Neil mentioned the Buddy Holly documentary. Here's Jerry Allison playing the Ludwig eagle kit at 4:25.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDD3y7qXhdI&feature=relatedBTW, if anybody has one the these sets and wants to sell it, please contact me.Thanks

Back in 2007 I got to play with Sonny West (wrote "Rave On" & "Oh Boy") at the Clovis Music Festival & went on the Petty Studio tour, met Tommy Allsup (drinkin' beer with him after the show :) ), the Tolletts (sang backup on "That'll Be the Day" & others) & Peggy Sue, sweet old lady now, about 5 foot nothin' :D

It was an awesome experience to be there & around the people who were part of the birth of rock 'n' roll.

What surprised me was I noticed the hotel was full of Brits, turns out he's a musical hero across the pond & still has a substantial following there (yes, I know about the Beatles coming up with their name as a tribute to the Crickets) :D
