One of the problems is that I cannot play it because I do not have the lug inserts yet. It's slightly (Very slightly) raised on the other side of the shell opposite the crack. How do you even get a crack like this on the interior? It's like someone slipped with a chisel and nicked it or something.

Unfortunately I've seen that exact type of damage before. If I can find the pictures of the 6.5 x 14" L.A. era Camco that was found at a good will then sold to a buyer on ebay for $850.00 The interior had the exact, almost exploding outward type damage but it was on the 6ply re-ringsand shell close to the RRs, in two places opposite of each other. The the damage looked like an enormous amount of pressure was placed on it from the outside and the wood buckled! Damn, what a waste! I'am sure glad I asked for detailed photo's of the interior prior to bidding...

So for a few years now I have been hunting down a Champagne Sparkle Snare to complete my 1964 kit. When they have come up in the past they have been either too expensive or I was just was too cash poor to buy. Well I finally got one at what I thought was a descent price ($400.00....I know still pretty spendy)And when I got it from the seller (ebay) it had this small crack on the inner shell. In the pictures during the sale it looked more like the typical scratches you see on interior Ludwig Paint. Everything else looks great on the drum but I am thinking about returning the drum. I want to know what you guys think of this particular damage. It is a little over 1 ply deep. Affect the sound? How much it hurts collectability. Thanks

I've probably seen too many CSI shows but it kinda' looks like the crack started at the edge of the hole with bolt/washer and started to slowly spread. Then somebody noticed it and "scribed" the vertical line/gash to stop the crack from lengthening. I've seen this done and have done it to windshields that get a "star" with a small crack to stop it from spreading due to the glass going from cold to warm repeatedly. Whatever the reason, the job done on this drum is not an example of pride in workmanship.

Believe it or else!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Thanks! I had an opportunity to buy that other drum and should have gone for it. I think it was actually forum member Altlanta Drum Guys and was a 64' that was perfect match versus the 65'. Part of the reason I went for this is that I had the correct snares and tension rods.(and lower price) Just needed the inserts. But you are absolutlely right that I should have asked about that rip in the paint because i did give it a double take. ....but wrote it off as a scratch in the paint.

Yep, that snare was mine! I kind of miss it, but I didn't see myself using it in many situations...other than maybe a funk thing...but still a cool drum.

No worries man. There will be others that come along. I may end up getting one again later on at some point.
