I just noticed a Ludwig "Breakbeat" kit for sale on e-Bay. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this model or whether anyone has had the opportunity to play one of these kits? Thanks!

I don't know a lot. very small sizes. made in connection with the drummer for the roots, questlove. originally came in a blue sparkle that looked nice. I think now they come in a few colors. I have read info from some drummers that have been pleased with them, especially for the price point. the snare appears to be the weak link from what ive been told. I like 'em. i'd certainly try a kit if I ran across the right one at the right price.

I played one at a buddy's house. For gigs it would be okay, the heads that come with it should be changed to a better drumhead. 16 inch bass drum has a good punch, tom and floor tom sang nicely. I didn't care for the snare drum. I was more impressed by the Signet by Ludwig. Great shells and again replace factory heads with better.

interesting that you mentioned the signet as that's what questlove is currently playing on the new tonight show with jimmy fallon.

I chatted with our own Bermuda for a bit and he spent a great amount of time with them before the NAMM show. He pointed out the things that most would complain about (lugs, bass drum feet, mounting) but he also really liked them and his complaint was that the heads that came with them are okay, but should be changed. I helped a buddy assemble one at GC and the shells are very nice and I agreed that the stock heads are weak. Overall a real nice kit compared to the "Breakbeat"
I almost bought one recently, but just couldn't pull the trigger on it... It was a "want to buy", not a "NEED to buy." But, check out some of the videos on YouTube. some of them are of good sound quality, and I think the drums sound pretty darn good!
Reviews I've read are generally favorable. I may wait for a while and pick one up used on Craigslist or something...

I have a white Breakbeat kit still in the box, I won't be using it until June/July. I have read people saying the chain on their bass pedal hits the metal bass hoop when using the riser. Solutions were move the pedal back so it didn't hit the hoop, or by changing to wooden hoops to correct. Weak snare, and heads need to be changed, but that about all the negatives I found. I will know more in a few months. The sound bites I heard were okay, they are itty bitty, and cheap. I always wanted a pocket motorcycle, so I will settle for a pocket drumset because I can't hurt myself on a pocket drum kit LOL

I needed a small kit for certain gigs that have been coming up. After reading reviews of the Ludwig Breakbeat kit and the Sonor Safari, I bought the Safari. Not at all disappointed in any way. Another member has a Safari kit he raved about, too. Plus, no sparkling teal---which was all that was available then---for me.
Yes, I changed all batter heads to coated Ambassadors and they truly sound very good. At first, I almost threw the snare in the dumpster, since I have snares and....what the heck...it's a cheapo. Glad I didn't; I put a coated CS and Amb. snare side on it. It sounds great, too.
Breakbeats and Safari kits have essentially the same poplar shells and probably come off parallel assembly lines.
I like the Safari too.i have a kit and it kicks serious ass for such a small kit. They are making them in red sparkle now. I have the black galaxy wrap which is actually more silvery looking. They sparkle like stars in the sky under lights. Beautiful and great sounding kit. Bass drum sounds great. I am with you on the snare. With the correct heads and tuned correctly it sounds really good too. Top notch lugs and hardware too. Whoops I know this is about the break beat kit. They have one at the GC here. Will have to check it out closer, but it just didn't look as solid as the Sonor.
