Ludwig & Ludwig - A bit of info please? Last viewed: 1 day ago

Hi,

I recently bought this 14 x 6.5" snare and would appreciate any further information that anyone knows about this model or its approximate age. I believe it dates from the 1930s but could be wrong. The shell, the 6 tubes and claws are nickel on brass and the hoops are steel. I've cleaned it since these photos were taken and it is in incredibly good condition.

Looks like a Universal model. The stamped logo, ( with Elkhart as their home ) indicates it was made after WW2 and before 1955.

Agree with BEC because I have the identical drum with "Ludwig Universal" stamped on the hoop. I was able to determine that the NOB Universal model in 6 1/2" X 14" was first released in the early '40's.

Sorry to revisit this thread but I just wanted to post a few new pix of my Ludwig Universal after a good clean-up. New Aquarian American Vintage heads complete the set-up. It sounds absolutely incredible. Just wanted to share!

Thanks for the compliments, it really is in lovely condition. Didn't really need to do more than strip it down and polish all the parts - fortunately it has been well cared for over the past 70-odd years. Sadly there is some scuffing to the nickel around the top of the shell where modern heads have been forced on but luckily it isn't visible. Not considered a calf head but maybe I will now.
