Ludwig 6.5x14 Bronze or Brass?

Loading...

Correct on the BB.... it's a copper alloy but not quite brass by technical classification, and for the photo essay I placed the magnets on the shell and they slid right down to the rim.

I could do a PMI check on your shell to tell you exactly what the alloy compostition is if interested.

Sure. What is a PMI check?

Positive Material Identification or PMI is a "Non-Destructive Testing" (NDT)method. In a nutshell shell it's a portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer (measures/interprets/records electron energies) that determines material composition.

They also have conductivity testers that are used with eddy current technology. The phase of the conductivity of the test item is compared to the phase of known materials until they are on the same plane. Pretty simple really.

All this high tech stuff's great, but I'm calling it "B" for brass.

OK I was calling it "B" for brass BUT I was wrong. This seems the definitive answer, from the 1981 catalog. BTW does anyone have one with those die-cast hoops? Never seen those.

The bronze shells have a more "coppery" color to them while the brass shells are more yellowy.......this is another way you can tell....but if you stated the drum was from 1979 or 1980 it SHOULD be a brass shell NOT a bronze shell, as you yourself just proved that they didn't come out with the bronze shells until 1981. Also, like others have stated, it would have BZ stamped in the shell, not just a B.
