These two videos will knock you out. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmFEcgRRKR0[/ame] and Buddy used the two bass drums because he was recovering from a broken arm from a handball accident. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-zM45GpKiE[/ame]
Louie Bellson and Buddy Rich playing Double bass drum kits. Last viewed: 3 hours ago
Mark!
Actually... that DID happen.. ( Buddy breaking an arm ) .. but that is NOT what this particular performance was all about. As can be seen, both his arms are in good shape in this clip! What DID happen here was:
A BIG DEAL was being made out of the fact that Louie Bellson was doing some amazing things with two bass drums, and Buddy being Buddy, well... he said I'll show them something! He had Ludwig/WFL ship two bass drums to the Paramount.. ( NY ) .. and proceeded to play his solo that night on two bass drums ONLY!, and completely unrehearsed as well. That was BR's way of saying hey, no big deal Louie! The two of them were friends!, but always present in Buddy's mind was that HE had to be #1, and there was no way that Louis Bellson was going to steal his thunder. Typical Buddy! He gave away both bass drums after that performance, and to my knowledge never played them again.
GREAT clip Mark!... but thought you might like to hear the real story as to the why behind it.

Yes - that story is in Mel Torme's book....Buddy Rich: Traps The Drum Wonder. A great read.....'warts an all' just the way Buddy Rich wanted Mel Torme to write it.

KONA/Gary!
Ah yes indeed... the "Traps" book... and a great read it is too. However, being the BR "freak" I am, and have been for the past 46 years!, I was aware of this long before Mel's book came out in 1991.. and .. I even have an older copy of that recording on cassette tape too in my decades LARGE Buddy Rich collection of "all things Buddy!" . Just sayin'.

The guitar player I play in the band with, has a great Louie Bellson story. When Joe lived in the LA area he had a gig at Gene Autry's club in Apple Valley. Pearl Baily(louies wife) liked to come in late and sing with the guys.Usually Bill Baily for one,but the guys could never get Louie to play drums with them.he would sit at the side of the stage and have a good time while Pearl sang. She would stay after hours and they would all have a jam session-except Louie Bellson.V
