if any one does take the time to look...are they the "right" snares to look for? don't really know enough to desiffer the "old" or "vintage" snares from "just a snare" or todays remakes. still learning this stuff.

The Ludwig Acrolite is one of the best snare drums ever made and are a bargian to boot. They use the same shell as the Supra phonic which is chrome plated and Usually comes with 10 lugs as oppose to 8 on the acro 5"deep drum.

I have a 65 vintage acro with the keystone badge and I love it.You can usually pick them up on Ebay and CL for under 100 and sometimes way cheaper than that.

The Acro is a no brainer Robin.

thanks steve b. i have read alot of discussions on here bout the acros and supras. not sure i really "need" either one but with all the raven about them i think i'd like to have one some day. i would go with the acro first, i like the looks of it best of the two. i think the black ones are real cool looking.

As I replied in another thread ... My son has been going to his 1970 Acrolite over his other snare drums, which include a 1965 Supra, 1968 Jazzfest reproduction, early 70's Gretsch COB 4165 and a 1965 Rogers Luxor.

The Acrolite does sound amazing with an Evans Power Center Reverse Dot batter, Hazy 300 reso and some Puresound Custom Pro Steel 24-strand wires. The batter head is just a little dry, but it still has a nice ringing sound put off center. The Custom Pro steel wires are very sensitive too.

At the $100 or less price, everyone should have an Acrolite.

There is a Keystone Acrolite at the Cleveland GC for $149. It's been there for a couple of months. It's complete, but it does have some small dings with mostly minor and a couple deeper scratches. Since it's been there for some time you might be able to get them down to $100 and then get the shell professionally buffed out to remove some of the scratches.

Hey Robyn, howdi heck!

The acrolite and supraphonic are both very nice drums. The Acros have a real sharp crack to them, I love the darn things. Watch the Craigs list and sooner or later you will find a deal, much better than Guitar Center. I have actually bought entire drum kits for 150 bucks that included a acrolite. I replaced the acro with a less quality snare then re-sold the kit for 150 bucks again. Lost a cheep snare but gained a good one. Right now I could buy a MIJ kit with a Supra for 150.00. The supra is nce but wont polish up perfect but would be a nice drum for you. Its got a blue and olive badge.

That's the Magic Formula right there! I've used that combination of heads and snares on Acro's & Supraphonics alike with GREAT results sound-wise.

You're preaching to the choir here, but yes, an acro should be in every drummers arsenal. Really amazing sounding snares they are.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

thanks for the feedback guys, i have heard lots about these snares since i've been here and if every "drummer" should have one then i guess i better start looking for the "right" one for me......... LoLoLoLoLaughing H and i think i'm a D' Drummer

anyway....i'm gonna get an acro in black for my b-day or Christmas for this year. i'm not jumping on the 1st one that comes along. i want to look around a bit plus gives me time to save for one. then maybe on down the road pick up a supra, then i would have one of each. also have been very curious about piccolo snares too. excuse my supidity but are piccolos used as main snares or are they side snares? not real familuar with piccolos.

then after the acro n supra, i'm saving up for a 1964 4pc Ludwig kit. Yes Sir

Robyn, just want to make you aware of the biggest drum show of the year. Its in St Charles Il. in two weeks from today. Tons of acros for sale there, turn on your charm and get a good deal. It cost like 15.00 to get in. About a 2 hour drive for me, so 3.5 for you? Well worth it. If you end up going, let me know, Im going Saturday with the KOA snare drum.

Thank you!
