Looking for info on a Paiste Formula 602

Loading...

Hi folks - first, let me say that I have often browsed this forum, and this is (obviously) my first post.

I've owned a few vintage pieces in the past, including a Slingerland adolescent kit (my first set, handed down by my uncle) that I restored. I've also had some vintage Zildjians that were part of my uncle's hand me downs.

I do feel obligated to mention that another forum has just banned me for a thread about this cymbal, stating I was fishing for a free appraisal. I understand their policy, and apologize to any members who might be also be reading this thread. While I am interested in eventually determining a value for the piece in question, I am really seeking information about the actual model. I am having a hard time finding any data searching around, and don't know if it's because the cymbal is rare or simply too boring to discuss.

Yesterday, I found the cymbal seen below in a trap case my uncle had recently dropped off here. He forgot he owned it, or where it was being stored. It is a Paiste Formula 602. From what I've gleaned from other sites, it is a pre-serial number with stamped label. There is no ink label on the cymbal, save the red 19" marking on the inside of the bell. The cymbal weighs approximately 2000 grams (weighed it on two scales, analog and a cheap digital, averaged them). Tapping on it tells me that it is probably meant to be a dark crash rather than a ride.

It is 19", no nicks or cracks, and has a pretty perfectly round center hole. It has likely been sitting in this trap case - untouched - for about 20 years.

I cannot find any additional markings or stamps beyond what is pictured.

If you can offer any information, please do - I'm very curious as to what I've found here.

Here are the pics:

Great cymbal, it would be considered a medium crash, 19" don't come around very often, you have a home run,

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Geez.. you need to get your uncle a nice xmas gift and have him over for dinner

602's were the cymbal of choice for many of the greats. There were many variations during the production of the line.

Good 602 info here. 19" 602's were sold as thin crashes or medium rides.

The last 19" that sold on ebay went for $219... that seems low to me.

Not a Guru... just interested..

Thanks, Jim - tell me about it. If we decide to sell it, he'll be getting the cash. Frankly, the cymbal doesn't suit my tastes, or else I'd keep it and not look back. He can no longer play due to arthritis.

I may actually be buying his '70s Ludwig kit that has been in cases for about 10 years now.

I think I found that old ebay listing, and the cymbal there seemed newer (if I am remembering the same sale).

Nice cymbal...and this site welcomes market value questions Cool Dude

$200 seems about right....just because it's a medium weight. The best old 602's IMHO are the thin ones. When they evolved to the later blue labels, they were making nicer sounding medium-weight ones, but the earlier ones in medium weight really are just so-so.

This question comes from somebody who's now been banned off 2 forums, and is currently half way to being banned on yet a third...(still working on that one).

May I be so bold as to ask which forum that was?

Let's just call it the "brand specific" one...

Brand specific...yes. An artful answer to say the least.

We don't want to be indiscreet about such potentially sensitive matters.

Unfortunately, I haven't been one known to be particularly discrete in times past. Hence the record that I've earned as sited earlier.

Nice cymbal though.

I hear ya!

Thanks to everyone for the info on the cymbal. An independent source emailed me this morning putting it in the $250 range by his estimate. He did think it might be a ride, however it REALLY doesn't sound like one to me. My uncle did use it as a crash, which is what it was sold as used at the shop he purchased it from.
