Look what I scored for 10 bucks!

flowers2 I was thinking it was going to be another straight up stencil shell from Star because of the throw off, then as I began the tedium of dis-assembly, I looked inside a lug, and viola, it is an early Pearl. The badge has long since disappeared, but looking inside the casting and there it is. I will post the results when I finish. I am having to rework the bearing edges with two grades of sandpaper, and the results are phenomenal. I know, you're not supposed to do it that way, but I have refinished more antique furniture than a lot of folk have even seen in my life, and my results are great. I use-get this--cheap birthday candles--to burnish the final product. I'll get some close-ups Jumping2 of before and after so you can judge for yourselves.....Walking

By the way--Anybody got a decent throw off they might want to contribute? Look at the one that came with....it is the absolute worst one I have ever seen....I've five bucks or so...Excited

[FONT="Comic Sans MS"]And here she is, all clean and fresh smelling, just like todays' laundry. It has 2 or three minor issues to deal with before it is 100%. One lug has hex nuts inside, so the lug is "free floating" at the moment, and it needs a muffler. It really could use a better strainer, but after a good cleaning, it functions the way it should. I worked all evening on it because one of the re-rings had come loose, so out with the Bondo....I mean epoxy. That took all of 15 minutes and a backache. Since it is already too late, I will have to wait til morning to test drive it. The truth is, I picked up two additional snares to go along with the heavy luan snare that came with the Majestics. This 3 ply, and the ever trusty round badge Made In Japan chrome job. It is going to really sound like a better drum than the name suggest once I get time to tweak it a bit. It sounds pretty cool right now. I am about to make a sacrilegious statement, so all of you purist turn your eyes...;-) This steel snare sounds like an Acrolite in need of a little tiny bit of tuning. Someone took a lot of time and used up considerable resources and head jobs, because it has that little bit of crack that says "Let me out, I need space to travel and ears to split."

The batter head on this one is almost new, with very little wear. I washed it in the sink, (yeah, that's what I said) and look at that, looks like a two week old head It also has new wires, the ever so loving cheapos they sell on the bargain wall at the shop. Now Thursday night, we are gonna take the steel one apart and see if it has any unique features, or maybe a name hidden inside of it's casings. I wasn't kidding about the throw off, if anyone has a decent old one they have laying around in the junk bin, let me know, I'd like to change this one. And one of those Japanese round mufflers would be nice too.... This little gem sounds good for what it is, and afterall, it is a Pearl 3 ply shell

To Rob G--I am going to post a few ideas and tell my secrets about tweaking those edges in a day or two in the restoration forum.

Finally I have been searching all day for info on what i think is a 50's model Pearl kit i salvaged off the curb yesterday.(yes someone was throwing it away) it is very similar to the snare you got for 10 bucks. I got the 14" snare 12"(i think) rack tom) 14" floor tom, and 18" bass drum. just interested in dates and models value would be nice but im more interested in the history (theyre pretty rough anyway) so anything you know would be helpful

Cool find. Hey Jonnistix, I *may* have an old chrome Pearl script badge in my parts bin (along with some other parts from a similar drum). If you are interested in it, I'll dig around and see if I can find it.

Basically, I got a similar Pearl snare a few years back but it had serious water damage so the shell was trashed. Stripped the parts and (hopefully) tucked them away.

Let me know. I may also have the lugs, inserts, strainer, etc...

I do kinda like to keep original equipment on even ElCheapo stuff. So, looking at the strainer on the hot little chrome job I have posted in the next thread, it would really be a bonus, as I have really good luck with this type of Japanese precision hardware...Laughing H

I respect that approach. But have a close look at the shell (outside) and you may find 2 little nail holes spaced maybe 2.5" apart. If you do, then that's where the old badge used to live.

Can someone tell me which maker the hoop is copied from? I know a few of these stencil kits have this type of rolled over stick-saver hoop, unlike virtually all the rest. And I do know I have seen them, but the maker's name escapes my pea-sized brain... This is, without a doubt, an old Pearl stencil, possibly Stewart? I don't know, just think they are really a cool design. Anyone???
