Lion Snare by Lyon and Healy Restoration

Loading...

Below are some pictures of a Lion Snare, made by Lion and Healy, that I am working to restore. This is my first vintage drum restore and I am unfamiliar with this brand. Also on the inside where the brass has been bent to create the bearing edge there are some cracks. What is the difference visually between NOB and COB?

The only missing parts are a tension rod and three of the hoop claws. So I expect the restore process to be fairly simple. Just remove the rust, polish everything, replace missing parts and reassemble.

Any information on this particular brand or anything I should be aware of before continuing?

I don't believe Lyon & Healy made all of their instruments, & subcontracted other

builders to supply them w/ products for their catalogs. This looks like one of the lightweight Ludwig Universal snares of the time. (This is just speculation, the hooks look like Ludwig's, as well as all the other parts)

Thanks for the tip! I suspected it was manufactured by another company, I had originally thought Leedy but was unsure. Where could I find out more about the universal snares? How could I find out how old it is?

I have been restoring a Lyon & Healy bass drum and

it is gorgeous. I have been searching for badges.

Anyone have any? It takes two.

I only have the one from the snare and it is paper. Any idea how to restore those? I am thinking if I apply steam to it that will make it soft enough to lay flat and dry under a book and then glue it back inside the drum. Any thoughts?

Everything is all rust free and polished. Now to find two replacement tension rods and three hoop clips. It came with coil over silk snares. Anyone know where to find replacement snare wire like this or synthetic gut snares?

I am not sure about finding replicas for the wires but I have heard of people using Guitar strings as a replacement. As for gut wires, try a tennis pro shop, the gut they use for the rackets works very well.

Nickel has quite a yellow cast to it.In triple chrome plating, the chrome is a very thin coat over the nickel, which confers a blueish tone over the yellow, rendering the overall effect as silver. Hold your hardware up to some known chrome hardware----it will probably look yellow. On some really old less expensive drums, there was also tin plate used---especially on the shell. Tin is a more silver/grey but will take a fairly high polish. It oxidizes grey and is soft ,so it is easily worn off.

I think I have it's older brother. The Lyon & Healy drum I have is more than likely from the vaudeville era.

The shell is the same as yours (pretty thin shells eh?) just has so much patina on it I chose to leave it alone. The scroll work on the wood hoops appears to be hand painted under close inspection.

The snare wires... since I also play guitar, I saved all the low E and A strings, A worked the best. I have heard of people using cord from blinds, piano's, gut guitar strings just about anything that will make it buzz.

The diameter on mine comes out to be 13.75 inches. Nice.... custom made head.

The strainer is quite something, it twists the snare wires to tension them and they go in to a leather butt plate.

Lyon & Healy made all sorts of instruments, Banjo, Piano, wind instruments, harmonicas and drums.
