Keller Vintage Maple vs Ludwig Legacy Classics

Loading...

I think the vintage mahoganies have got more balls than the DW Classics and at a 1/3 of the price. I'm only using single ply coated heads and the tone is rich, textured and deep, plenty of mids and lows; I haven't experimented with other heads apart from a vintage ambassador (which I like on the vintage snares, but thought flattened out the sound on the toms too much), but I imagine using clear heads/emperors would produce good results as well.

A comment from Justin at Keller: The Vintage Maple come out as approx. 3/16” of Poplar and about .081” of Maple. Combined with the 8 ply all-Maple rings, and they are about as close as one can get without finding a new old-stock shell. Poplar, a very underrated drum wood in my opinion.

Thanks for the info re Ludwig natural maple finish. I'll keep it in mind in making my decision.

Good to know...

I didn't mention that I want my L&L's to be finished clear, so that makes putting together *the* dream set very difficult indeed. The Keller shells are looking better and better. :)

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

Other stuff:
60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here
70's Acrolite (under RE-construction)
Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

Indeed! I have always said that. Poplar's only real drawback is that it's not cosmetically h o m ogenous like maple or mahogany. That's why it's used as a secondary wood -cosmetic reasons ONLY! Structurally, it's a GREAT wood. It's light AND strong and flexible! It takes glue well and is easy to sand.
