Karen Mij Blue Spk 4 Pc Set For A Song!

Heres this lovely 60's Japanese set gathering dust on my studio. Haven't seen much action in about 6 years. I bought it,used for like 2 gigs and then forgot about it. I pulled it out of the cases, polished the hardware and the shells to look more than decent. The heads are original and 75% of them can still hold for a bunch of gigs. (The batter bass drum head needs to be replaced.) You don't need to clean or restore anything, everything is ready to go. Just a change of heads and voila! you got a sweet looking 60's set for a real good price...

Sizes: 8x12 tom,16x16 floor tom,14x22 bass drum and a surprisingly well constructed 5x14 COS snare drum (presents severe pitting though)

A sturdy Banana rail type tom holder and the floor tom legs are the only mounting hardware included.

The set is 99% original with the exception of 6 tunning rods on the floor tom (I bought'em brand new).

The rack tom has 3 small extra holes below 3 of the lugs because the previous owner replaced three lugs with bigger lugs leaving three very small extra holes. They're hard to spot. The rack tom is also missing the muffler. Theres is some mild bubbling on the wrap of the Floor tom and the Bass drum too...

I'm selling this set for $150.00 plus shipping (I'd guess around $50-$75 depending on how far you are located. I'm shipping from North Hollywood CA).

A little more info for the masses~~this may be a Pearl stencil, the snare is a beast when properly tuned. One of the best COS out there. For the bass reso head, I usually spray paint these old thin Weather Master bass reso heads with Rustolem Ivory. Don't be shy, paint it from several angles, letting it dry a bit between coats. It gives the head a new lease on life, looks 100XX better and makes it react more like a calfskin, believe it or not. I have yet to have one of them not do well after the painting and it dries it out a bit to boot. Takes a bit of the ring out.

If both hoops are wood, that is a good thing, if not, go to www.aitwood.com and order some new 10 ply, 1 1/2" hoops. This is the absolute cheapest and best place to buy wood hoops for all drums. You can get them from 16"-24" in 10 or 12 ply, 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" maple or birch, for less the 60 bucks, normally, including shipping for both. Now that is the best deal out there and they are the exact hoops everyone else sells, only not painted or routered. You can get them to cut your inlay channel as well. AIT is simply one of the best places to shop for certain wood products, shells included.

If these are 3 ply, I would suggest using Aquarian Z-100 coated single ply heads. Even if they are 9 ply I would at least try them.

Thanks Jonnistix for your ever-growing knowledge on everything MIJ! as you noted some of the lugs on the rack tom (3) and one on the floor tom were replaced with bigger ones leaving small extra holes. I replaced them with some MIJ lugs that I had which looked pretty close (all MIJ Gretsch knock-offs look pretty close, same as the Sonor knock offs...) Very little elongation was requiered.. they hold and tune fine....The Bass drum lug do look differnt from the ones on the toms and when comparing them with another Karen bass drum from set that Im restoring (Copper diamond pearl) I noticed that they dont look like Karen lugs...HmmmmHmmmm...The bass drum has no badge either so It might not be a legit Karen...wow! that sounds funny!...A legit Karen! Still a perfect Wrap and era match tough...

Now about the snare...Boy!!!! that thing is a beast and the $199 tag is because of the snare by itself...A seriously amazing snare!!! The design of the shell reminds me the Gretsch 4160 drum! Whoever gets this set its going to be very pleased!

That looks like a kit that I looked at a few weeks ago in Norco that was on Craigslist.....he was asking $75.00 and I declined. They were too dirty for me. I told him if he got $75.00 he'd be lucky, but $50.00 in the condition they were in was more feasible.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Hey BBB! Yeah, I saw that set too. A friend of mine bought it. No,this is not the same set. I bought this one back in 2006 in Los Gatos CA. The guy was selling a Blue sparkle Downbeat w/ a Zildjian lot. He had this set too and I just bought the whole lot.
