Just one of those 70's Slingerland aluminum snares

Loading...

I've never really liked metal drums but a few years ago I got it in my head to scoop this up (Which then turned in to grabbing a chrome over steel, chrome over brass AND chrome over wood, but that's another story)

I'm just now getting around to cleaning them all up.

Here's the before and after.

Wow! Great job. I have the exact same snare. Just wondering what you used to clean the aluminum?

Thanks!

Mcdrummer, I did the shell first with a buffing wheel and this stick of red compound called "***eler's Rouge" then went over it again by hand with Simichrome.

It felt a lot like polishing a soup can.

The hoops and casings I did all by hand, first with Noxon, then Simichrome.

Mike, I used an Ambassador Fiberskyn. I'm not a big fan of metal drums, but I've always thought they sounded better with a Fiberskyn. The aluminum shells sound, to me, especially "Dry" with them.

The old head? Oh crap. I would have given it to you.

I'll get killed for this I'm sure, but there was no life left in it (And I use head to the bitter end)

It went off to the Great Snare Drum in the Sky.

Very nice. I've always been a fan of the Acrolite, and since I collect Slingerland, knew that eventually I'd get their version of that drum. The finish I can't place in the catalogs though - is this the Student Aluminum, that came with the case and such, or is this a later aluminum model that I'm unaware of? Nice drum, I always thought aluminum was a great choice for an all around snare drum.

Thanks Rick!

As far as I know, this is the student model. m I just polished the hell out of it.

It did come with the case and (what's left of the) stand.

I used it the other night for a few songs/

It's "OK" but it hasn't really changed my opinion on metal drums, though they are fun to own!

Just curious what the case looks like, I picked up a plastic Slingerland case. Was actually thinking of using it for a suitcase drum. Its u-shaped. It it's the original case for this drum maybe I'll keep it in tact? Or is it worthless.
