Might be no secret to you all, but was interested to hear about his skill in a recent bio on his life. His early days as a magician honed his hand dexterity, and according to Doc, the band leader, he was quite good. They showed a shot of him at home, beautiful spread in Malibu, CA, playing what looked like a vintage white, marine pearl set - Ludwig? Slingerland? That's the question - anyone know what he had?

Yes. He had Buddy's kit. And he was VERY good. There's a great bit of video of him playing during a TV interview (1984 Barbara Walters) at his house. The man had chops to spare.
Here's a goofy one of him playing a small washtub with Benny Goodman ...

Johnny was an EXCELLENT player! His manual dexterity from his countless years of card tricks really helped! And, of course, Johnny LOVED having Buddy on the Tonight Show. I miss Johnny and Buddy!
Regardless of his drumming, JC was a class act. Steve Allen, Johnny Carson... class acts, set the standard for those to follow...

Not many videos of him playing but remember him jammn' with Buddy somewhere. It might have been an interview in the 70's.

If you check out 60 Minutes, there was an interview that they did back in the late 70's early 80's. The set that was at Johnny's house in Malibu was a Slingerland I believe.
If you read Mel Torme's book Traps The Drum Wonder, that gives a little more insight to Johnny & Buddy's relationship, which was a fun one that came across very well on all those Tonight Show spots Buddy did.
Used to check TV Guide out in advance to set the VCR to get them all down.
Good days!

Conan O'Brien was also a drummer. Maybe someone can identify his drum set in this photo?
