JIMMY PRATT mute install?

I was taking my Sunset Satin Flame bass drum apart today to clean it. The mute looks to be installed backwards but I'm not 100% on that because I don't have a photo of a factory install. I'm finding all kinds of weird stuff with this bass drum but for now I will stick to this one topic.

Here are some photos I took during the take down today - I should have taken one before I removed it but you can see from the imprint - the outline of the mute frame - how it was installed. I'm thinking the felt should be over top of the rounded metal part - so when you turn the dial the felt is pressed against the head - not the metal part. The second photo shows the rounded piece of metal connected to the hardware - backwards (upside down) I'm thinking. I'm holding the felt as how I think it should go......but I need to turn the metal part over of course. What do you think? Does anyone here have one handy to look at?

I took a photo of the one that's on my 58 Gold Sparkle bass drum - but I put that one on there 6 years ago and now I don't know if it's upside down or if the SSF is upside down. It's the 3rd photo. It works fine.

Thanks - Gary

Looks like someone was drunk at the factory.

Looks like someone was drunk at the factory.

Ya - my take too. On another thread I posted photos of the bass drum tom hanger plate holes. Yikes! I'll post one here just to add some injury to this thread. Same bass drum..........the post hole is more than 1/4" diameter too wide.....and just a beast of a hack job. If it wasn't done at the factory - then who would go to the trouble of doing this damage on the install?

Easy enough to fix the Pratt Mute though. I still can't get my head around why someone would actually let this bass drum out of the factory door like this. Unless.....it was a disgruntled employee. Gretsch sold the company to Baldwin (the piano people) in 67 - my drum is 68.
