From Dan Boucher

Interesting topic and photos. Having mostly had Rogers drums, that is one issue I haven't run across (though Rogers had their issues too).

Hi Dan!

I think you are correct in regards to Rogers! I've never noticed any lug misalignment on any of my wood-shell snare drums!

Mark ..that green sparkle is a beautiful drum indeed... but to me it appears that maybe?? the badge may be centre'd but it's the lugs are not ?? I am just looking at the tension screw threading,,, ?Cheers Mate..

John!

Your observations really got me thinking about this...and I had no choice but to pull the heads and check things out!!

Here's what I found; the shell is, in fact, almost perfectly 5.5" in depth all the way around. The lugs and badge are offset 1/8" upward toward the batter edge! Both solid maple re-rings are 1" in depth. However, the real culprit is the batter head that came with the drum. Due to the deep collar, the batter head is almost 1/4" higher than the snare-side head! That adds up to the batter hoop sitting about 1/4" lower on the shell than the snare-side head. Now my OCD is really causing issues! I have a later 60's Slingerland "Tom" batter head that I'll swap. The only difference between "Tom" and "Orchestra" batters was a rough coating for brush work. The "Tom" head is smooth white. I'll snap some more pictures after I reassemble the drum!

Here's the "improved" drum! The side-by-side comparison of the heads show they are now almost the same collar height. The "Tom-Tom" batter is on the left. The final results look pretty good in regards to lug offset! A big shout-out to member longjohn for shaming me into doing this!! All kidding aside, I'm glad I made the head swap. I can sleep better now! LoLoLoLo

Mark,, sorry about that... I have some OCD too.. I have been playing around with a 70's sound king shell that I repaired dents, then sprayed the inner silver coating, put a replacement throw & butt on. The batter side stick saver was beat up.. so I replaced it with a NOS engraved hoop from John Ollis... but the hoop it sits low on the shell too .. I almost run out of thread in order to tension it up... In my case it's a modified player & sounds brilliant.. but looks a bit off... Any how your great green sparkle looks even better now....LoLoLoLo

Cheers... & Happy 4th of July to all of you US guys...,

John
