Well...I believe they sold 'em in Mahogany and Walnut, Lacquers, and Pearls. But like most drum companies, this was only an outline within which to work. i.e. there are exceptions (knotty pine anyone).
I have a kit in Mahogany finish. It is a Maple outer with a nice Mahogany stain and a light bit of shiny. It has aged well. If your drum was wrapped, then it most likely has a Mahogany outer which will look different from mine. But, then again...exceptions exceptions exceptions.
You should do alright with what you purchased. The natural wood snares were definitely stained by the 60's and 70's. They were using Maple as an outer and Maple doesn't have that dark of a tone (colorwise). The early snares were made of Mahogany and Walnut (and others), so they had a natural color tone to them. Yours and mine don't fall into that category.
Hope this helps.
Good luck with the project.
