Introduction and a few q's about my new purchase

Loading...

Hello my name is Evan. I've been playing drums for 12 yrs now and just bought my first vintage drum set by Camco, which was custom made.

I play in a band and the kit belonged to the lead singer's uncle whom unfortunately past away in recent years. This being said, i know very little about the kit and neither did his family. So, I wanted to try and find some help identifying it's year and any other info anyone could provide. For the most part it is in great condition, aside from the scratches on one of the bass drum hoops and a few missing labels.

I've checked out the information on the site and it is very helpful, though i do have one question about the paint on the INSIDE of the first 3 out of 5 toms ( the 8"/10", 8"/12", & 14"/14"). Is it a bad idea to attempt to remove this paint if i decided to? If not, what would be the best way to do so?

I uploaded some pics of the kit below to help describe, also including a 20" Istanbul custom dry ride from an unknown year (which was signed by Mehmet Tamdeger and Agop Tomurcuk), and a 5" by 14" chrome Ludwig snare with 10 lugs (that i wasn't able to identify from the link provided at this site), both of which were also included in the purchase.

toms: painted inside ; 8"/10", 8"/12", 14"/14" (floor tom with legs) not painted inside; 12"/14", & 12"/15" (both hanging floor toms)

camco snare: 5"/14" ludwig snare; 5"/14"

BDs: 14"/22" & 14"/20"

looking forward to getting some feedback!

thanks,

evan

First off Welcome, the snare drum is a ludwig model 400 5x14" supraphonic, one of the best snare drums there is, i can't see the badges on the camco's. your cymbal all istanbul cymbals are signed by Mehmet Tamdeger and Agop Tomurcuk), but you have done very well. other camco fans will chime in. well done.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Welcome to the forum, and also to Vintage Drum Mania!

That's a beautiful set of Camcos. I don't know as much about them as I'd like to, but I'm sure a real Camco enthusiast will be able to help answer some of your questions. Enjoy them, I'm sure they sound incredible.

your camco badge is the 60's winged oaklawn illinois badge, home run, very desirable kit.

Those are FABULOUS drums. Do not mess with them. Leave the paint on the inside. Camco Oaklawns are the best Camcos, and Camcos are right up there with Rogers and Gretsch. I think there is a Camco forum as well.

Yeah. Thats the one. About the white paint; Most Oaklawn Camcos that were wrapped had the white paint inside. Drums with a wood finish, like yours, had unpainted interiors. I don't know why yours are mixed, but I would leave them be. Maybe use coated heads? My Camcos were originally wood finish, but have been re=wrapped, so my wrapped drums have the natural interiors. Seriously, you have some great drums there, and if you don't believe me, sell them to me!

Though i believe you and have witnessed it, I am selling this kit if you are interested ... however just the shells and some hardware it came with, not the ludwig snare or istanbul. Let me know if you are interested, ebehme2@gmail.com
