Interesting Slingerland picture

Loading...

I was perusing Drummerworld & clicked on Phil Ehart's- drummer for KANSAS- page & there was this picture of his set.

I thought something looked strange about the toms, looked closer & realized they're set up like tympani, with heads extending beyond the shell. I vaguely remembered seeing some drum company making something like that but can't remember. Love to hear from you Slingy experts on this one Bowing

I always liked their copper finish :)

I think it was Pearl that did the extended head thing, in the 70's.

Plus, Tama had the "gong bass" drum.

Pearl had production drums like that for a brief span in the 1980's. I think Louie Bellson used them just before leaving Pearl for Remo drums. I don't recall Slingerland offering anything like that as cataloged production drums. Might have been prototypes for something that either didn't work out or didn't make it into production as Slingerland was starting it's downward spiral around that time.

Phil Ehart has been one of my favorite rock drummers ever since I bought Kansas' first album. I saw Kansas four times, and every time Phil had a different setup. Given his creativity with percussion, I wouldn't be surprised if he had those Slingerland timp-toms custom made. Beautiful drums there.

The first time I saw Kansas they opened for another band. They came out & just knocked everybody's socks off, massive ovations after every song & calls for encores at the end.

The other band came out & literally half the audience didn't pay any attention to them, walking around & smoking...something ;)

The other band?

Fleetwood Mac, pre-Rumors :D

Whoever put that show together must have been smoking too.
