If I am not mistaken, I believe he played an acrylic set. One, if not the first to have done so. I think he built it.
I believe it was a Pearl kit, which would have been pretty 'cheap' back in the day.

You can see the player side rims through the shells of the ride toms.

That's a cool story thanks for posting it. I was big into IB back then as many were. For a while it was "the" rock solo to play. LOL. And very interesting how he made the dot heads too.
I was at the Fillmore East,when Zep opened for IB.John Henry and Company tore it up,2 encores.There is a story that IB didn't want to take the stage after Zep finished.As good as they were that night,that may be true.

Cool article, I hadn't read that before. I just recall talking with Ron some years ago (we both endorsed Impact drums) and him mentioning that. It stuck with me, because I assumed he'd be playing a US kit. Japanese drums weren't very prevalent among pros prior to 1970 or so.
