Man, I've been kicking myself for passing up a President 5 piece (unoriginal snare) for $50. It was totally canibalized. Badges gone. Original wrap was gone and someone stuck on some god-awful thin lightening pattern contact wrap. Several reso hoops missing, including the bass drum, and the bearing edges were in a sad state, but still... The 'disco ball' type lugs were a dead give away.
It would have been a ton of work, but it could have ended up a cool player set. If only I could have seen this thread a few months ago...
I think we`ve all "been there done that"DOH as well at some point or another. Don`t feel alone. The President was really Pearl`s first attempt at a real top line innovation- going to the fiberglass shells in 69. Also in 69 was the Bulgee snare drum, which I have not played yet. They were beginning to get a feel for what they would be doing in the late 70s alot with stuff like roto tom tuneable drums and wood/fiberglass composite shells ect...

wowzer over 1k for that set... Hmm I know its old... but man it looks in rough shape with all the pitting and rust. So what brought in such a high price on this set.. the shells or?
My guess is "hype"Kleening
Well.... It`s hard to say but a new player on the Japanese auction scene recently seems to have loads of cash for vintage Japanese brand drums- driving up alot of prices. He paid 100,000yen (1100$) for that President kit and on the same night paid 135$ for a Gracy 5x14 with die cast vintage aluminum hoops. 135$ is too much by half- I have sour grapes because he beat me out- I own the other three drums now from that same blue sparkle Gracy with die cast hoops (13,16,20) - he`s got the snare. Now, 5 days later he`s got big bids on a pristine 1967 Pearl Valencia that looks like it`s not yet one day old- the bid is already 450$ with days to go. I wonder if he just came into some cash recently- things aren`t going to quite down until he runs dry or runs out of storage space I expect. lol
That particular President kit was in rough shape - I personally was willing to pay 450$-550$ and restore it. The fiberglass shells are pretty impervious to time and conditions, the wrap was not in bad shape and the hoops could be cleaned or replaced. The 10 lug deluxe, wood snare is pretty uncommon and rare here. It came with alot of 1969 stands and the set itself is from the first year of production- that why I think it went for so much. Anyway, if the prices are so high I`ll wait and try to find the right moment on the right piece- it`s like fishing or gambling- timing and luck, right?

This seems like a terrific situation to be in from what I am reading!! Some guy with more money than brains is buying up everything in sight. You have the three drums that match the snare he just paid twice what it is worth. Do you follow me here????? Sell him those other three drums and anything else he is willing to massively overpay for and turn this money into some kit you always wanted but may have been out of your price range!!
Have a wonderful evening
