I believe the person who came up with the idea to put rods that can be turned with a drum key on the throwoff and butt plate of a snare drum should be declared the smartest person in the world Cool1 and the person who came up with the rims system, the stupidest!DOH
I'm Just Saying
Agreed.
Although the RIMS mounts really open a drum up, boy do they look terrible, IMO.

Maybe on newer drums, but I hate seeing them on a vintage kit, they are more trouble than they are worth. I tried using them on vintage and modern toms and it was always such a pain changing heads, not to mention I didn't hear enough difference to warrant using them, especially on vintage drums. On the other hand, those little rods on the throwoff and butt plates make it a breeze to change snare side heads and wires.
The RIMS mounts can be sort of a pain
but I like them in spite of those difficulties
especially on MIJ kits for "play rather display"
if more RIMS mounts were used there might be a few less vintage drums
with gaffed mis-matched mounting hardware and extra holes
and yes the drum key fasteners on the strainers and butts is way better
The slotted head fasteners are almost unusable
again referring mostly to my MIJ stuff

I recall you mentioning how you like your rack tom mounted on a snare stand. I don't know if you've tried them, but TNR percussion makes a product called Little Booty Shakers that attach with velcro to the snare stand basket. They will really open your tom up almost like the tone you get by holding the drum up in the air and hitting it. I notice a huge difference when I started using a set of them.. relatively cheap, about 20 bucks for a set of 3.

I never heard of those, but I'm sure there are all kinds of gizmos to enhance the drum sound. I play vintage drums because I like the sound they produce without all the gizmos. Modern kits resonate like mad mainly because of the sharper edges. That's not the sound I want, if I did I'd sell all my gear and buy a new, shiney kit with nice precise edges and rims mounts. I do however like some of the new hardware features.

My God! I have the same dislikes! Did you forget the same commercial played over and over again every time there is a break in programming! I can understand Elvis shooting out his T.V.'s when things annoyed him! I think I might be tempted if I had the money! pPobably made him feel a lot better!!!

Speaking of commercials, I'm so tired of seeing the ones with the newest miracle prescription drug.DOH
