Hey everyone

I've been trying to get somewhat the snare sound of Ian Paice, but No matter how I tune my snare I can't get it...

I'm using an Ludwig LM402 with Dunnet R4L throw off, Coated ambassador on top, Ludwig 'snare side' on bottom, Ludwig snare wires, No muffling.

Do you guys know how I can get (very) close to his snare sound?

I'm looking for the sound you can here in the following clips:

I think he tunes his top head tight to give it that snap. I do the same. I tune my top head tight and tune my bottom head low.

I real big Paice fan. He's my #1 influence.

If I could figure out what Ian is doing in the first video around minute 11:15 my life would be complete. The absolute classic Ian Paice drum solo fill. Please, someone come to my aid...

I have been a Paice fanatic for 40 years so let me tell you. I have an 1986 6 1/2 super phonic I use one of two heads an Evans single ply white coated with a white dot on the bottom or a Remo ambassador with a black dot on the bottom. The sound your looking for is tune the bottom head so all the wrinkles are out of it except for the lugs by the snare bed. then turn all the lugs about a half turn. This makes for a low bottom head the on top crank the **** out of it. Then get a jelly and cut it in to four pieces take one piece and move it around to control the amount of ring. Never use the internal muffler. I have nailed his snare sound all my life. It cracks but yet you have not sacrificed the low end that the super phonic has. as far as the toms go just put the heads on so there is no wrinkles and that's it same with the kick. You will have to play with snare for it will change from room to room.

Hope that helps John Police

meter43,

Just picked up a 6 1/2" Pearl cob. Tuning, tuning tuning, but wasn't getting a sound I liked out of it. Just tried your tuning. WOW! Low end and crack! Don't know if it get close to Paice, but wow. Thanks! Bowing

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.
