I need some information about how Paypal works for the seller

I've used Paypal to buy items but never sold anything.

Recently I've advertised some drums for sale - they're a lot of money - $10,000. I've had a couple of responses that I don't know if they are legit or not. Lots of spelling & grammar mistakes......& they want me to send my PayPal info to them. If I do accept the money & ship the drums (from Canada to England in one case) what are the risks to me? Is there a risk that the money sent to me via PayPal would actually not be paid to me & my drums would be lost in the shuffle or scammed/stollen with no chance of recovery on my part?

The replies to my drum sale look a little suspicious. I can supply more details here in that regard if interested.

If they say they are interested in your "Item(s)",with no mention of drums........it's a scam.......

Hi Blair

Thanks for the replies.

Ya - I don't know who would actually fall for a scam like this but how on earth would someone think a person (me) would send off a set of four conga drums & bongos without actually receiving the money? That's what I can't figure out about PayPal. When someone like this (these) people send money to me through PayPal & I receive it & send off the drums do I not really get the money in my hand until after the drums are delivered/received at the buyer's end? If that's the case - yes it is risky for the seller. Risky because you've sent your drums off and may or may not get them back and the buyer can "cancel"(?) his payment. Is that how it works? If so.....no one's going to get my drums until I cash the cheque. Maybe I should just say local pickup only and go from there because if someone is interested they'll talk to me about it at that time.

The other suspicious thing about the two answers to my add is that they don't want to know anything about the drums.....they just want to send money assp(?) haha.

These scammers are getting more and more creative with how they work. I've seen fake emails posing as Paypal, USPS Money Order, and Western Union. They will copy a real email from one of these companies and doctor it and send it from a fraudulent email saying that you have money waiting in your account. I've even seen one link a site diguised as Paypal, but when you type in your account name/pw all it does is send the information to the scammer. They usually have shipping accounts setup, so when you ship it using their account you have no possible way of getting it back. Most of us have dealt with buying/selling drums enough on the internet to know that nobody in their right mind would buy a $10k set of drums sight unseen and no questions asked, if you're dropping that kind of dough you better know all of the details. Like blair said if they don't mention anything about the drums in the email and call it "item" it is obviously a scam. These guys have pre-written emails that they send out to hundreds of people a day, most are smart enough to see through the scam, but it only takes one clueless person to make the scammers day a success. On a high ticket item like this I would suggest a local cash in hand sale, or inquire with a reputible dealer like Steve Maxwell.

The following (Lewis is the buyer) bolded here is what I've received as of a few minutes ago - start at the bottom - top one here is my latest response:

Lewis

I do not feel comfortable with this communication. Furthermore, what would a boy of 8yrs of age even begin to know or appreciate about drums like the ones in question here?

Please do not contact me further regarding this.

I am only accepting serious responses to my add & I do not believe yours is truthful or serious otherwise you would be asking quite different questions regarding my drums.

Thankyou & good day sir,

GW

Never ship until the money clears to your bank account.

Not just showing in your PayPal account.... transfer the money right away, it should take only a few days for it to appear in your bank account.
