Is it just me or does the bass drum look like the later “bowling ball” wrap?

Hey Mikey I also posted a link to this on the vintage cl page on drum forum yesterday morning. Crazy how fast people were bidding on it.

I was thinking of posting here but I didn't want to double post if most members here are also on drum forum.

I'm curious to know how many here are members to that forum as well?

Ok guys, school me on this kit. It doesn't look very special to my untrained eyes.

But it has a lot of interest with 45 bids, so it must be pretty special.

Jim, any 60's vintage Ludwig set in Oyster Black brings more $$ due to the Ringo association. There's no getting around it. In the end, it's just another common Ludwig finish of that time. Bill Ludwig commented that the company made a glut of drums in that finish simply due to Ringo, and that is true. Consequently, there are plenty of old Ludwig sets available in Oyster Black.

Right now, there's a guy on Reverb selling what seems like dozens of Oyster Black Ludwig sets. He's probably been hoarding them for years. I'm as big a Ringo fan as anyone, but paying a big premium for this finish neither surprises or interests me. I do have a Rogers set in Black Strata, which is identical to Ludwig's Oyster Black. I get my Ringo fix that way.

On the set in question, the toms are older and feature the original Oyster Black. The bass drum features the newer "Bowling Ball" version of Oyster Black. Delmar, the plastic supplier, changed the finish over time, for whatever reason. Purists prefer the older version generally, again, because of Ringo. The set is missing parts and obviously needs an overhaul, a good cleaning, etc. We don't know whether there have been any modifications either. I wouldn't bid on these drums, but that's just me.

Well now they have an all 60s gold glitter Ludwig set in really good shape. But they were smart and have each piece selling individually https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/78170407 including 5 pies, 4 of which look very old.
