Hollow Logo Zildjian Splashes-Anomalies??

Loading...

Greetings,

I recently came upon two hollow logo Zildjian splashes, 8" and 10". First here is the 8":

As you can see, the ink stamping of just the model (Splash) on the top of the cymbal (with no other logos or size indications) is typical of the hollow logo era. The engraved stamp (although tough to photograph) is also consistent with other hollow logo cymbals I have seen/owned.

On the back, I cannot find a trace (even a "ghosting") of the Zildjian logo. It seems odd, especially since the cymbal doesn't seem to have been polished at all, and the stamp is so prominent and legible on top (I wrote the weight in grams).

Now for the 10":

Again, the ink stamp and engraved stamp are consistent with hollow logo era cymbals.

Here's where it gets weird. This has the Zildjian logo on the bottom, but it is filled in. At first I thought someone just colored it in. After looking more closely at it, it's just too "perfect" for someone to have colored it in. Also, it would be darker and seem "newer" then the rest of the faded patina. I don't care how talented you are, it would be literally impossible to color that in by hand and make it look that perfect on something that small.

Does anyone have any light they could shed on these? Did Zildjian stamp the 8" and 10"s differently due to their small size? I had a 12" hollow logo Splash at one time, and I have seen others, and the Zildjian logo on the bottom was the same size as on 22" rides. To the best of my knowledge, Zildjian only had one size stamp for the hollow logo models. It looked huge on the 12", and looked small on a 22". Since Zildjian only made 8" and 10" sizes that were smaller than 12" at that time, maybe they stamped them differently? Maybe the 10" is a "transition hollow logo"?

Anyway, just wanted to get your thoughts.

Thanks,

V
