Hi-hats to the right?

Loading...

Hey Guys,

I'm wanting to try running a set of hats to my right. I play 1 up and 2 down with my ride in the traditional spot where the second mounted tom would normally be.

I just stuck an extra hat stand I have just to the right of the ride and just behind my first floor tom just to give it a try. I kind of like having a set of hats on the right so far but it is out a little further and more to the right than I would like but I'm not sure as I do not have a lot of options for moving it around to see.

For now I would like to keep it a fairly simple set-up and am not looking for a remote stand with a cable and foot pedal but that may change down the road if I end up liking having hats to the right. Just looking to have a set of hats I can adjust how open they are between songs if needed and would like it to look clean.

Does anyone run hats to the right (or left if you play lefty) and have pictures of your se-up or any suggestions?

What about something like these?

I've often thought about doing it. Just never have taken the time to experiment with it. Curious to see how you like it.

I've never tried it myself, but just thinking about the set-up, if you can eliminate the cross-over of the arms that happens every time we play a groove between the hats and snare - you've made life easier. Having a set of hats on the right lets you play open-handed (no cross-over,) and places the right hand over the toms. You'll probably be able to execute some fills that were hard, or impossible before because your right hand doesn't have to travel so far (from left-side hats to floor toms) to reach the drums. I just like the sound of it. You put a bean in my ear. I think I've talked myself into it. I may try this myself. :D

Too many great drums to list here!

I've thought about this too.

But, I moved away from double bass (and also double pedal) and tried to get back to the roots of really basic groove drumming. Not that you can't groove with two kicks, but I found myself relying too much on the gear and not maximizing every possible use of a minimal kit. I'm really glad I did but that's another thread...

Anyway, here's a couple ideas:

I have an old hi hat center rod where the wing screw for setting the top clutch broke in the clutch. I had to replace it and the clutch, but I ended up using that broken part to hold a small Ran Can bell cymbal next to my snare. My idea is to get a rod and two clutches from your junk box and put it together. A multi-clamp should be able to hold it but if not, do what I did with a couple worm gear clamps onto another stand. The center rod bends fairly easily.

I also though about a cable kit. Less so these days as I don't think I'd use it much, but having a set of 13's and 15's handy for their various sounds is pretty cool. Has anyone set up two hats on normal stands on the left? Maybe I just had a good idea for myself! I have (at least) two hat stands...

I believe they now offer a remote hat that is not adjustable on the fly (no cable/pedal), but you can precisely set the cymbal gap. That might fit the bill. And no unnecessary stuff cluttering the set up.

Keith had a HH to his right.

He would leave a bottom on and lock it or sometimes put a bottom and top to just set it to a sloshy setting. Looks like he puts it where you do gun......

Thanks for the help and ideas guys! So far I am liking having a second hat on the right, just need to get it mounted in a better spot. I find I am giving myself a few more options with being easier to start a fill on a floor tom. I'm not the fastest drummer so being closer to the floor tom with my right helps me out with some songs but maybe less so for others. It is adding a little more texture to my playing.

J!m. In the mid 80's when I was in my teens, I was trying out for a local cover band and when I got to their jam space they already had a drum set up and they didn't want me to mess with it (I think they were trying out a new drummer without the old drummer knowing). Well I had just gotten a pair of Zildjian New Beats I was pretty proud of (still have them) so I tried to play it cool as these guys all had about 10 years on me and I set up my hats next to the hats that were already there. They looked at me strange and I said I like to play with two hi-hats and one of the guys said they had never seen that before. I didn't get the gig!

Oh yeah, and Keith Moon is the inspiration for trying the hats on the right!

Thanks. Do you know what the hi-hat mount is?

Mapex and Gibraltar make one very similar. Cool idea...good luck with it.
