Hey Camco aficionados...

Loading...

I recently purchased a set of LA Camco drums that were most likely produced between 73-75. Unfortunately, there were some serious oversights on the sellers part regarding original parts and the condition of the edges. The set was advertised "all original", which turned out not to be the case. The bass drum hoops are definitely aftermarket, even though I was assured over the phone that everything was original. Unfortunately the photos I viewed prior to the purchase did not reveal what I discovered once the set arrived at my home.

At any rate, I'm well aware of just how difficult it is to find original era correct Camco parts. I'm trying to get a sense of what I could expect to pay for era correct 22" hoops if I could even find them. I have exhausted my search to no avail, and as far as I can tell, no hoops were sold on Ebay recently.

There were other issues like some pretty chewed up edges on the bass drum reso side. That can be fixed with several hours of meticulous work and minimal expense if I were to do it myself.

Also the threads on the tom mount may be stripped, but it just could be the set screw. I need to see if I have a set screw around that fits...If it is the mount, I guess retapping would be the way to go. Finding another tom mount might also be difficult and costly. Besides that, a few trods are aftermarket which is not a big deal as I think those wont be too hard to find.

I will say that I don't think the seller purposely left these issues undisclosed, however I don't think they were thorough in their inspection, competent, or knowledgeable enough in the vintage drum department.

I'm thinking I'd be out a few hundred dollars to actually end up with a set that I payed for... replace parts and fix the edges, but that is somewhat of a guess.... Oh and recutting the edges is NOT necessary. Fixing quite a few nicks and chips is all that would be required.

I still need to check the tom reso side edges and I will do so once I get back to work.

Any insight on what I might pay for parts and resource for acquiring what I need would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi SC,

Sorry to hear about the flaws and missing parts.

Unfortunately those things happen often. Lately I’ve seen a couple of Camco sets offered as “all original” where it was very clear that they were stripped from their original hoops and/or other parts before putting them back on the market. Those sellers would always use ignorance as an excuse,...

The condition of your new set doesn’t seem dramatic but like you said; Camco parts are very scarce and high-priced.

Those BD-hoops, what finish are you looking for?

Would you be willing to share some pictures of your new purchase ?

Yes, I have seen those listings as well. One in particular on Ebay that is pretty blatant if you've watch that particular set change hands. Hoops disappear in the night with no mention of that in the listing. Not cool.

I'm looking for 22" Walnut hoops. The spark of hope in that is, it seems like I've seen several Walnut finished sets from LA recently so that appears to be a more common finish.

Yes pics to come if I reach an agreement with the seller. Hopefully they will do the right thing and provide the exact set that I paid for.

I have a Walnut LA era set with 24" bass drum. I I think you can find some Yamaha Hoops to match pretty nicely with your set. Nothing looks and "feel" like the original ones but they should blend ok while you find the real ones.

Blair, that would be great if you can hook him up, however a personal message seems like more appropriate etiquette.

And thanks for your message Vinny.... I'm still searching.

You'll find the hoops with the bullet nose profile available from Precision Drum Co are virtually identical to the originals. Take some time finding the right Walnut stain and you've got a workable situation. Trying to find originals will be laborious and expensive.

By this stage of the Camco game virtually everything except the tuning pegs, the lugs and other clearly Camco stuff, was Japanese and generic so don't get too hung up on that detail.

The swivel nuts inside the lugs are the longer type still on the market. Bass drum hoops and bearing edge (though reso not so critical) sound like your main issues. Photos would be useful. I've got a few stray parts but no mounting arm......use a snare stand like everyone else did. I've got the actual tom mount.

Thanks for the info. I grabbed a tom mount last night just in case, and to have a spare if I have to tap the other one out. Edges will be fixed and my search for hoops will most likely be a long one. I have some that will suffice for now Much appreciated.
