Here are those Ludwig Clubdates I bought Last viewed: 2 days ago

OK here you go pics of the drums I bought today. They were in very good condition and I was able to get him down to 350 plus a Zildjian crash cymbal and some Beverly hihats that look like junk to me but I took them. These drums just need a good cleaning for the most part. I did see a date stamped Oct 12 1967, I think it is hard to read. They have reinforcment rings and are painted white inside. No extra holes anywhere. Wrap is still glossy and tight. Chrome will just need a good polish( not steel wool, I know). I wil go back and refer t this web site for proper cleaning but will need help finding a front hoop, claws and rods. I do not think the interiors need painted, would you do that anyway? It will be fun locating the hardware for this one.

What do you think of the snare drum, is it a Jazz fest as someone called it earlier? Did I do good on this deal? I would like to know more about this set and what the first steps should be to start the restoring process. Thanks for all of the advice today!

Thank you!

Here are the pics, I hope! I did look closer at the base drum and noticed that it does need some new whit paint inside probably due to the front head being off for a long time. I removed the head on the rack tom to see the inside of it and it is really good shape!

Nice find. I haven't been in this game very long, but I'd say you did well, especially since the wrap is in good shape. They should clean up nicely. Personally, I would not repaint the interior. Just clean it all up. As for restoration, take is slow, one piece at a time. I may be alone on this thought, but I clean each item as it come OFF. ie: remove one tension rod - clean it, repeat. Once they are all off, clean one hoop. Repeat this on the other side. Then, remove one lug - clean it, repeat. Restoring drums using this method means that you won't have a pile of dirty parts sitting around, which can look like a lot of work. Instead, once the drum is all apart, you're almost done!

Keep us posted.

very nice purchase. ive got a set in that wrap myself. i also agree that i wouldnt repaint the interior. original is good in these situations. and before you even clean the interior, makes sure you dotnt wipe off a subtle date stamp.

Man Jeff, those are sweet. One of my fave wraps, it is so classy. I love the classy wraps, as well as the funky ones, like all the late 60s- early 70s Star wraps, and a few of the Pearl funkies. Ludwig and Rogers took far more chances with wrap than Slingerland and Gretsch, but nothing like Star. I think they knew at the time some of those rarer wraps would become not only fashionable in their own time, but also in the future.

One other thing. Don't rework the edges unless they are trashed, it's one of the things that give these old 3 ply drums there distinctive sound and tone. Before working on them at all, (the edges) let us have a look as drums without the hoops typically endure many years of abuse, but there could well be better solutions to routing them. If they do need it, use the proper roundover profile.

That said, they are now yours to preserve for the time being, but if you ever need to sell them, re-routed edges could, and likely will, devalue them.

I do not think the edges are too bad. I can get some pics of the base drum edge where the head was removed for a long time. Too bad someone took the head and hoop off and lost it. I started to look for the hoop and tension rods on ebay but no luck so far. I have lots of time to get this done. My plan is to get all of the peices including hardware and sell it. Might have to wait until the economy gets better to sell, I am not going to give it away.

Thank you!

Congratulations,.... a true beauty !!!

Good luck with its cleaning and no,... don't paint the interiors.

If you consider ever selling them, they're much more valuable untouched.
