Help!!! Vintage Pioneer Marching Snare??? Last viewed: 5 days ago

I have vintage 1963 Ludwig Pioneer marching snare. I know it was a marching snare cause I rescued it from an old high school almost 30 years ago, because I remember leaving the Clipper? cross chest hitch strap.

I have not found 1 picture of the Clipper reciever mount that is on it. Nor have I found one marching snare of it's depth. The reciever is chrome, half diamond shaped (4" x 2.5"), 3 bolts, and a Clipper reciver slot? (female) is 1" X 1/4". I have not found 1 picture of this Clipper reciever mount, nor any other Clipper reciever mounts on the internet... I've only found the Clipper "hitch" (male) mount. Is this a standard Clipper "reciever"? Has anyone ever seen a pioneer with this mount?

Also, this snare was origanally Laquered, but underneath the paint there is a very thin maple ply. This is also something I can't find anywhere. The Pioneer was available in a mahogany finish, but not a maple finish. It is beautifull, and I can't understand why Ludwig would paint over a maple ply.

It is 3 ply including the verneer. The first ply is a very thin mahogany, and the second ply is 1/8th" wide. It is not red like mahogany, nor as pale as maple. The maple outer ply matches the Rock Maple glue rings.

ludwig used maple as the exterior play when they were going to be duco(painted) drums. the paint adheres to the maple better.

Just curious...did you take all the hardware and badge off of that drum?I think I already know the answer,but I had to ask.Pioneers were not marketed as a marching snare,so that modification was probably not done by Ludwig,but its not impossible.

Yes. This is the original hardware I took of the snare before I stripped all the paint when I was about 8 years old. After I stripped it, I put it all back on, and put it in the bag untill 25 years later.

Is the reciever ludwig hardware? If the snare was modified for marching, it had to be done by a professional conversion company, not the highschool who used it. I have yet to see a pic of one clipper reciever mount on any ludwig drum. Do they look like this? do you have any pictures of these? Has any one ever seen one of these?

I appriciate the input, and any more info you could provide. I did read somewhere about diamond shaped mounts, but no pics. I'll see If I can dig up the article.

I'm sorry, I'm having trouble getting past your handle. There's a guy on ebay that irks me because he cannibalizes perfectly fine vintage drums so he can squeeze a few more bucks out of the drum, destroying an irreplaceable vintage instrument in the process. Don't get me wrong, stripping a wreck, un-repairable or badly damaged drum in order to salvage/recycle useable parts is fine.

But taking apart otherwise complete vintage drums that are in good condition? As a lover of vintage drums, I have a real problem with this guys ethics. Sorry for the rant, but your handle/nickname set me off. Nothing personal, we don't know each other and I hope I didn't offend you. It's just righteous indignation on my part towards a destructive practice.

The triangular tom holder looks like it 'may have' come off of a Standard kit.

I am the one stripping wrecked, un-repairable or badly damaged drums in order to salvage/recycle useable parts.

I got a hold of an 1972 KOA woodgrain wrapped Rogers Set that was junk except for the hardware. If there was a market for junk vintage Rogers drum sets, I would have gladly not spent the time taking all the hardware off. I did plenty of research before I had done so.

As for this snare and a few other vintage Ludwig items I had allready had for 2 decades... same deal. Worth more for the parts than the complete drum because of the condition. Had I known when I was ten years old i was making a big mistake by tearing them apart, I wouldn't have done so.

I have no interest in keeping vintage drums for myself. I have an interest in providing parts that those who can use them. Not to mention making some money, as I am currently unemployed.

Please clarify if I am the one you are talking about.

I apologize if u believe i am cannabalizing vintage drums. If I wouldn't have came across these drums in the first place, they would have been consumed by fire, so I think I did please the vintage drum god in some way.
