Help: odd drumhead size

Loading...

I have an old kit cobbled together from various bits and bobs: small Bevery New Standard bassdrum (20") and tom (12"), Premier floor tom (18"), Super Zyn hats, Zildjian ride and Zyn crash. I have a Pork Pie 12" snare.

My problem is in getting a new head for the 12" tom. When I bought it off ebay it came with a clear Remo Ambassador that looked pretty new. I put it through at rehearsal a week or so back and was quite pleased I could replace it with a white coated head to match the floor-tom.

Unfortunately, a 12" Remo replacement head didn't fit! It was slightly too large to fit into the hoop.

I took it back to the shop to see if they had one a fraction of an inch smaller but no joy. (the moron beind the counter tried to palm me off saying "it's measured in Imperial, not metric. That's why." - I was asking for it in inches!)

Does anyone specialise in these? Or am i best to just replace my cheepo (but nice) tom with a different one. Got a few gigs coming up in April so need to get it sorted really!

Thanks in advance for your help, I'm confident someone here will have some advice.

As soon as I saw the words "Beverly" and "Premier"...I knew your problem. Both mfr's built metric-size shells for a while, early on, before switching to the standard "international" sizes in inches.

Remo is your best bet but, man....those heads probably aren't gonna get to you anytime too fast...although they are not special order heads, they actually make 'em for those drums.

keep us posted.

I bought a 16" Remo Coated Ambassador from a well known auction site and it was nearly 1/2 an inch too big,,the dealer did replace it no problem and he said that it was made for an early Premier kit.

I did list, on another post, the Remo part numbers for the Pre-international size heads. I don't have the option of looking through my old posts to find it.

I'll dig up my numbers if no one can find it.

Here's the post.
