Help! 68 slingerland--shell cracked??

People have told me that a 6 lug snare drum has less pop than an 8 lug. So a 6 lug is more of a max roach sound than a buddy rich snare sound. I think this theory may be true to a point but the sound mainly has to due with the size of the shell and how you tune it.

What sort of head would you guys suggest? Just a remo coated ambassador? BTW--pics are on my last post on page 1!

I've tried em all and the coated ambassador is home for me. I messed around with fiberskyn - it stretched. Renaissance - not as resonant as the ambassador and some powestroke varieties - tone ring makes it a little drier and those I kept on until I played them out. Everything else was sort of -"uh, I don't think so." But that's me. I know exactly what I'm getting with that head. No surprises. Home sweet home. A lot of guys rave about the consistency of the coating on the Evans heads. I like them for bass drums, especially the ones with the little teeny holes around the perimeter because I play with a front head on the kick and seems to deaden the head a wee bit and make the beater ball stick when I want it to. On the toms coated emperor on top, clear ambassador on bottom. Been that way for over 20 years.
