Heavy 18" Zildjian dating assistance

That knurling that you see is an artifact of the lathing process itself. The 18" is early 1970's and the hats are 1960's.

Even though the stamp is similar to a '50s stamp, I though '70s as well beacuse of the lathing. I've always thought that type of deep even lathing starting on the bell was indicative of a later period than the '50's, and since that stamp was also used in the '70s I jumped to that conclusion. Could you clarify what the determining factors were for you?

hrmm, curious as well.

There were a few others I've come across with this lathing as well.

Those 2 trademarks, the late 1950's and the early 1970's are similar, but not exactly the same, so you could make this determination from just that alone. But there are the lathing grooves which are different here than what you'll see used in the late 1950's as well. And finally, then there's the hammering. Here it appears on the top-side here instead of the bottom as would be the case in the late 1950's.

I tried to determine what might be different, but some of the elements of the stamp in question were a bit obscured. I couldn't see any difference between the '50s stamp and this one except that perhaps the height of the letters in ZILDJIAN might be a bit shorter on the '70's cymbal. What am I missing?

I thought the thin font on ZILDJIAN without the 3 dots would certainly be an indicator.

I'd say what everybody's missing is a real timeline.

That's true, but until an updated one is available, I'm relying on a combination of the old one I have from years ago and your newer research which you share with us here, and earlier at Cymbalholic. Unfortunately, the old A. Zildjian timeline I have from Cymbalholic ends with the 1960's.
