Head recommendation

Loading...

Hi,

After 20 years I decided to try and start playing again and besides the challenge of getting my chops back I'll have to restore my 70's Gretsch set. I can imagine there have been some developments since I stopped playing so I would like to ask which heads would you recommend for a 18 - 12 - 14 setup plus cob snare from the sixties that will be used for jazz clubbing mostly. I understand this is highly subjective but I would like to hear what your favorite heads are.

Thanks in advance

Martin

Coated Ambassadors are still the gold standard.

I sometimes use Fiberskyn FD for a slightly darker sound, or Suede/Renaissance Ambassador for a more open, ringy sound.

That'd be batter heads, I like clear Amby or Diplomat resos, but many swear by coated ones. More of a look thing, imo. You could also use a smooth white, no one would notice from the driver's seat. Thickness is more important.

Thanks.I guess my taste tends to lean towards a dry sound with little resonance.

I would also recommend coated Ambassadors, or even Evans coated G1 heads. For jazz, you really need more than a "dry sound with little resonance". Besides, you could put those Gretsch mufflers to use to dampen the ring. Just my opinion!

Ludwig Coated Mediums are like Ambassadors but a tad dryer and warmer, with a coating that lasts much longer and gives a louder sweep tone with brushes. Highly, highly recommended for jazz.

Thanks guys. So nothing has changed since my days. In 35 years of playing I've never used mufflers in my drums except the bass drum so don't take my description of what I like too literally.

Am I right in thinking that there are as many recommendations as there are drummers ?

Oh, and I can't seem to find Ludwig heads in my country.

Ludwig Heavies are 10 mil. like Ambassadors, Ludiwg Mediums are thinner.
