Hal Blaine and Tire Chains

This has perplexed me for decades. Love Bridge Over Troubled Water. One of my favorite all-time songs. But is Hal Blaine's tire chains on the drums ending of this song a bit over the top...? I ask myself, like "why"? Was that really necessary?
