"to do the Slingerland grommets properly you have to buy the $65.00 tool."
Nope...you don't see my more recent post below!
You’re looking for one like that one in the pic? If so, I have one.
In answer to my own question...I just went through this with not such good results, but learned a lot after seeing this. Watch this video by Jim Moritz at Chicago Drum and you'll see there is no reason (at least that I can see) to spend more than a few dollars in basic hardware. It should be pointed out that the aluminum Slingerland grommets are pretty stout, so the allen head bolts are far superior to a phillips or slotted head bolt (save you from slipping out of the slot while trying to hold an unwieldy screw driver). The bolt diameter should be the largest that will fit. The Slingerland badges call for 3/8" diameter bolt. Make sure you use the nylon washer too. So a allen head/flat head countersunk bolt of at least 1" length AND a regular allen head bolt of at least 1". If the grommet protrudes more than 1/16" you need to grind/cut it down. https://www.facebook.com/jim.moritz.31/videos/1911427268876905/
Thats the exact way i install all grommets on all makes of drums. The results are great all the time for a very small cost. The vid is a good watch.
