Gretsch/W&A? Hi hat clutch-how to use this??

Loading...

Guys, I went to put hats on a Gretsch hi hat stand but can seem to figure out how to put the top hat on the clutch. Is it missing parts or probably I just don't get it...

I can be that person that is baffled by the obvious, so replying with too much info is welcomed. Help2

Think this my be missing some parts? Cannot see how it will tighten to the high hat rod.

I have several of these Walberg and Auge high hat clutches on old high hat stands. I don't have one in front of me but I don't think it is missing any parts, the wing nut should tighten the cymbal with the two felts and it closes tight enough to engage the high hat rod at the same time. They are a little awkward to use at first but function fine. I guess the closest modern usage is a microphone stand. You can put your cymbals together at the top of the rod and then slide it down to position. Hard to describe in words, but easy to feel after the first time. Good luck with your Floating Action bass drum pedal, someone had converted it to a cocktail drum set up. Yes, Camco got the design from Martin Fleetfoot and it is still around all these years later.

Thanks pedal_pusher. If I get you, put the cymbals on the rod and tighten the wing nut to the wing bolt on the rod and it should tighten the cymbal to the rod....I'll give it a try.

Putting it on my Gretsch hi hat stand worked just as pedal explained above. Yes jda, the splits do close around the rod. But I still feel it sits awkward on the rod---but hey, it is what it is. I can live with it if it's period-correct.

Like John, I don't like this clutch. Since this is a stop sign era set, by any chance did these production years make stands with a different---better clutch??

The bottom threaded split section is a "collet", just like on Rogers Swivo parts. The split collet will tighten around the hi hat pull rod. Very ingenious and holds tight!
