Gretsch Round Badge Help!

Loading...

Hey guys!

Long time lurker here. Finally decided to create an account. Here's a Gretsch dixieland snare drum I got for pretty cheap and I am wanting to restore it and use for some recording and light gigging. I do have a few questions though:

1.) The throw-off is broken, I found one on eBay for about $90, is it worth it? Or should I add a Micro-sensitive strainer?

2.) Whats the best way to repair the bearing edges? Wood filler?

3.) Trying to find 14" 6 Lug Die-cast hoops, do they exist?

4.) What heads should I use, and how do I make this thing sound great? I feel like it has some hidden mojo in it. :)

Thanks for all your help guys!

Howdy, Welcome to VDF!

1. I know that $90 is rough, but that's what the suckers go for.

2. A little wood filler will do the edge repair just fine. Follow up by going over the edges with 00-00 (double-O) steel wool and then rub in some butchers wax. The edges will be smooth as glass and it'll tune up easy with no hangs on the head.

3. Your odds of finding a 6-hole die-cast hoop easily are slim. That's going to be a tough find unless you get lucky.

4. Heads are a very individual choice. I don't know what kind of sound you're going for. Evans coated 360's, or Remo Emperor on top with an Evans Hazy 300 on the snare side will do nicely.

A 6-lug snare is going to be an open-throated drum. Tuned low, or mid-range will bring out the best in the drum.

Can't wait to see it all done. :D

Welcome to the forum! Glad you joined. Nice snare. Regret I can't be of much help.

1) I wouldn't spend $90 on an original. Crap throws. As long as you don't drill any holes a modern strainer would be the way to go.

2) That is a pretty good knick in the bearing edge. I would carve a bit of wood slightly larger on the exposed edges and glue that in place. Let dry and sand then use wood filler for any gaps.

Can't help on three and four.

Welcome

That strainer could be repaired. But yea, wouldn't spend $90 on one.

I agree with the head choice, and their tips for the knick in the wood are spot on. Couldn't add anything else to that.

Wood filler alone will shrink as it dries. Under vibration may very well come loose. Just my take but any gap over a 1/16" should have a filler bit of wood.

Creighton - It's just a dinger, not the Grand Canyon. A quality wood filler will do the job just fine. Cutting it larger to accommodate a wedge is overkill.

Just my 2 cents

This product is perfect for the edge repair... You can pick up a tube from ebay... just put on a dab of masking tape to protect the wrap..

Cheers
