Gretsch bass drum tom hanger - repair suggestions please

Loading...

From Kona

I bought this Sunset Satin flame shellpack a few months ago.The bass drum tom hanger is a nightmare - but we all know that. The hack job done on the bass drum tom holder is unbelievable.I have a few thoughts about what to do here but I really do not want to remove this rare wrap. I posted a photo of the poorly placed bass drum tom mount a while ago. Here are some more detailed photos. I've never seen such a bad 'factory'? job. The hole drilled into the bass drum for the hanger to fit through is more than 1/4" bigger than it has to be. The plate is bent and one of the bolt holes in the plate is destroyed - probably from stress.I know the holes could be plugged but that large area with no wrap would bother me. Maybe I should put a Diamond Plate cymbal mount there to cover that horrendous large hole then I would only have a few small bolt-sized holes to fill. My gold sparkle late 50's bass drum has a cymbal mount right there. That way I could drill the shell for a Rail Mount and use only one of the 8x12 toms that came with this set. Or maybe even mount two Rail Mounts?Any suggestions on what I should do here? Maybe just leave the mount on the bass drum.......and use a snare stand to mount a tom.gary

Jerrysterken - Part of the issue here is that it's a rare finish - it may be difficult or impossible to find a 'piece of matching' Sunset Satin Flame wrap. It was introduced in 67 (that's the year Gretsch sold the company to Baldwin by the way) and was available 68 and 69. Apparently it was not a popular finish. I bought a new kit (identical to this one) in 69.....same finish....and sold it in 76. The finish was reintroduced in 1992 as Pink Satin Flame.....but it was a different shade....darker I believe from what I've seen in the photos.

pgm554 - that does look like a functional double tom holder. I have a couple of these Gibraltar stands which I can surely rig to suit what I need in the tom holder department. They're massive and very heavy - I use them to mostly hold cymbals right now. I have the 9600 series - been using them for about 8 years now. I got rid of my double bass drum rack (which I used with my 6pc Gretsch kit) 5 or 6 years ago and bought some Jazz (light weight......lighter weight) Gibraltar cymbal stands. They're nice but I may buy another dbl rack.....I do miss it once in a while.

You could easily hang the two Satin Flame toms on this rack system - but I think in a way the beauty of the 68 Sunset Satin flame kit would be lost in the rack somehow.........don't know for sure though.

Would you prefer to hang your tom(s) off the bass drum if possible or are you more concerned with hiding the mount base?

Hi Kevin - I'm not the most concerned about hiding the mount base - although it should be haha. Where I'm at now is I don't want to 'fix' the butchered base holes. I will hang the toms some other way and make do. The other issue is even if I did fix the base the tom hanger itself is one of the most atrociously designed tom hangers out there I'm sure of it. I was recently talking to Ray Ayotte and mentioned the tom hanger and he calmly assured me that it was one of the worst designed tom hangers. I know Ray and he would not say a negative unless it were true and worth stating.

I will clean the drums up best I can - maybe even throw some Nitrocellulose black gloss lacquer on the hoops too - and be happy with these beautiful drums......6ply 60's Gretsch............20/12/12/16
