Gretsch 8x5 snare, tell me about it

Loading...

Found on on CL semi local, seems to be a great sound but I know nothing about these tiny snares.

This one is a steel shell with an 'L' arm mount on it, Im assuming off a cocktail kit.

Anyone have an experience with them?

I bought it, I love it!

Turns out it was made in 02 for year, called the "Mighty Mini"

I picked one up new from Guitar Center about 5 years ago (impulse buy) its a great little drum for the dough. I got it with the L arm for 100 bucks if I remember correctly. It's cool as an aux snare drum mainly because it doesn't need a snare stand I used to fly it off my high hat stand I used it on a couple of gigs I was playing with a hip hop act. It worked very well and added a great tonal difference when combined with my supraphonic. If the price is right I think you'll like it, I did.

Oh yeah! I know you guys like pictures sorry I forgot them in my previous post!! Here's where that snare is currently being used it seemed to find its way on my percussion rig. It works great for doubling up snare hits with the drummer with one hand, and holding it all down with a tambourine in the other. Also, if you drop the snares off this guy the steel shell works real well for a mock timbale sound when you don't want to lug the timbales out or the rooms just too small.

I DO love mine for sure, played it out yesterday with my bass player and had a gas with it.

Such a unique tone to it.

What wires are you using on yours?

edit: paid $70 for it and mount.

Yours looks like a nice little drum.

I haven't seen one that small.

I bought a Gretsch BlackHawk Mighty Mini in 07.

It's 6x10 & picked it up new.....with the mounting arm...for $149 I think. I use it a lot. It's well built and sounds great. I use it for an Aux tom most of the time.

odd, seems like the 8x5 is only an '02 production.

Your 10" looks sharp.

Im having a real pain of a time getting a good snare response though. I think I need wider wires, these are real narrow as the attachment for the wires is squarely on the head.
