I thought this was rather cool and have always been into patents.
Check it out, they say it goes back to the late 1700's about 7M patents

Now, with the above patent you will see a section that relates the patent to other patents.
With that list you can type the patent number in the search box and go directly to that patent.
In the list you will see a Bower patent from 1904.
I believe Mike Curotto has an early Bower snare drum withe this very unique snare strainer system

I wonder when the first snare drum patent was?
