'Good' head for gong/pancake drum?

Hey everyone

First of all: I already did this post on another forum, but I want to gather some more thoughts on this.

I bought a 20" gong/pancake drum.

The head that came with the drum sounds like ****. It seems like it’s a two ply, and has an extra damping ring build inside the head. (Powerstroke type?)

What would be a good head for this type of drum?

(Single headed, there is no reso side!)

20" heads aren' cheap... So I won't buy different types just to experiment.

I also haven't any 20" heads laying around.

I thought of a Remo Black dot head (CS), but I'm not sure if I'll go for coated or clear...

The heads I use on my set are all Remo coated ambassadors (top and bottom, wide open - 14,16,18), an Evans Emad on my 26” BD, and an CS black dot heads on my rototoms (6,8,10).

Do you guys have some recommendations?

I have a clear Aquarian Force I head on my 20" gong drum with a vinyl Slug patch in the middle to prevent stick damage and it is very LOW, deep and long.... deeper than my 18 floor and thunderous. It works for me!

I put medium weight Remo Renaissance heads on several marching bass drums that ranged from 16" up to 36" for use in percussion ensembles. We also had two 38" single headed bass drums with six inch shallow shells (its a long story) and put the same heads on them. I was very impressed with the sound. You can tune them tight for good stick response but they still had a nice low pitch. Of course you will need someone else to play them and listen to the sound from a distance to see how the audience hears them. Good luck.

I went with a Remo coated ambassador... I'm blown away. Such Power!
